ONEONTA —
Oneonta City School District Superintendent Michael Shea has told The Daily Star that he will retire, effective Dec. 31.
He will be submitting his formal letter needed to take that step during the regular Jan. 25 Board of Education meeting, he said, adding that he discussed the issue with the board at a meeting earlier this month.
Shea will 54 at the time he steps down and will be ending a 32-year-long career. He will have to wait about six months to start collecting from the retirement system, he said.
He said he had long planned on taking this step in the 2012-13 school year. But, he is doing it at the end of this year because, “it just seemed to be the right time for my family.”
He started at Oneonta on July 1, 2005, after serving in the top spot at Franklin Central School for five years.
Shea started his career as a history teacher at Tri-Valley Central School in Grahamsville. When he went into administration in 1995, he said, his goal was to be a superintendent and to work at Oneonta City School, from which he graduated in 1977.
“I’ve been very fortunate in my professional career,” he said, “to have attained those goals.”

A triumph for the ages
GENERAL CLINTON CANOE REGATTA ... The combination of age, heat, humidity, a broken paddle and the talents of current General Clinton Canoe Regatta kingpins Andy Triebold and Steve Lajoie proved too much for 55-year-old Serge Corbin. Triebold and Lajoie sucked all the drama out of the 50th annual C-2 pro race _ a 70-mile endurance test from Cooperstown to Bainbridge along the Susquehanna River _ in the race's first hour or so. It marked the fifth straight year they've won the regatta and the seventh consecutive year Triebold has been in the winning canoe.

A Main Street facelift for Oneonta in the 1920s
It has been just a little over 30 years, 1980 in fact, that Main Street in Oneonta went through a major transformation in appearance. Even now I'll hear mixed comments about the changes, which included antique style lamps, trees, planters and brick trim. Some liked the changes while others liked the wider street with the even-sized sidewalks.
