Storm won't stop Winter Carnival, co-chair says

Cooperstown event will go on as scheduled

COOPERSTOWN — Forecasts for a storm Friday haven't changed plans for the Cooperstown Winter Carnival, according to Sarah Lewandowski, co-chair of the event.

"I don't anticipate any changes to the schedule," Lewandowski said. "When you have a winter carnival, you have to be ready for winter weather. We're going to do everything on schedule. We'll just do it with an extra foot of snow.

"Obviously, the biggest thing is if people are able to turn out," she continued. "We want everyone to drive safe, but we want them to know that if they can make it, we will be there."

Lewandowski stressed that the opening events Friday night are going to take place. She said there are no plans to postpone them until Saturday.

"Friday, we have the coronation and the fireworks. Those will both be taking place as scheduled," she said. "If it is snowing, then we will have fireworks in the snow. Then there is the cooler at Templeton Hall. If people can come out for it, we will be having it."

Lewandowski said that there have been a couple of cancellations for Saturday's parade. "The SPCA was going to have some dogs in the parade, but they won't now, little things like that, which are understandable."

The possibility of a weekend storm could turn out positive for Sunday's events.

"We haven't been able to have the sled races and some of the outdoor events in a couple of years," Lewandowski said. "We've set up tents in Lakefront Park to have ice scupting competitions.

"If the storm comes," she continued, "we'll just have Winter Carnival during a winter storm this year."
