COOPERSTOWN —
Forecasts for a storm Friday haven't changed plans for the Cooperstown Winter Carnival, according to Sarah Lewandowski, co-chair of the event.
"I don't anticipate any changes to the schedule," Lewandowski said. "When you have a winter carnival, you have to be ready for winter weather. We're going to do everything on schedule. We'll just do it with an extra foot of snow.
"Obviously, the biggest thing is if people are able to turn out," she continued. "We want everyone to drive safe, but we want them to know that if they can make it, we will be there."
Lewandowski stressed that the opening events Friday night are going to take place. She said there are no plans to postpone them until Saturday.
"Friday, we have the coronation and the fireworks. Those will both be taking place as scheduled," she said. "If it is snowing, then we will have fireworks in the snow. Then there is the cooler at Templeton Hall. If people can come out for it, we will be having it."
Lewandowski said that there have been a couple of cancellations for Saturday's parade. "The SPCA was going to have some dogs in the parade, but they won't now, little things like that, which are understandable."
The possibility of a weekend storm could turn out positive for Sunday's events.
"We haven't been able to have the sled races and some of the outdoor events in a couple of years," Lewandowski said. "We've set up tents in Lakefront Park to have ice scupting competitions.
"If the storm comes," she continued, "we'll just have Winter Carnival during a winter storm this year."

Politics, fitness and landmarks dominated local news in May 1968
Area residents mulled over the idea of Gov. Nelson Rockefeller as their next President of the United States. New fitness opportunities emerged for all ages. One area landmark was saved while another was razed. It was only a part of our life and times in May 1968.

My pal Brucie, savior of Sidney's hospital
Ask any hospital administrators if they've ever heard of a closed hospital in New York state that has ever been re-opened. They will say, "Impossible." In a half century of going through records you can't find any.

Let's do what's needed to keep America safe
Some may find this column offensive, but I don't care. I have an email of unedited news photos of the Boston bombing. Do you want to see Americans with limbs blown off, muscle and flesh torn away from bones, and the streets smeared with our blood? My email address is at the bottom of the page. Let me know, and I'll forward it to you.

We've become our own worst enemies
The past month has been marked by a seeming unprecedented number of man-made tragedies, as distinct from those caused by violent outbursts of the natural world, such as earthquakes, hurricanes and tsunamis.

How safe has the Afghan war left us?
It's hard to see any way we could have avoided Afghanistan after the 9/11 attacks. We couldn't, after all, just leave al-Qaida ensconced in the country's hinterlands while Taliban chief Mullah Mohammed Omar sheltered its leaders. But in the back of our minds, we all probably had the same nagging worry: that regardless of how the Afghanistan effort went, it could never make the U.S. completely secure from terrorism.
