Bernstein's speedy ascent to conclude at nationals
To say Oneonta State senior Sean Bernstein is the fastest person ever with ties to The Daily Star's circulation area is difficult to quantify. But if there's been somebody faster in these parts, his identity has been well concealed.

Fed ammo theories show who is gullible
Ask 10 people for their thoughts on the National Rifle Association, and you'll likely get a broad range of responses. But on one point, we can all agree - if a threat to the Second Amendment appears, the NRA will find out about it and quickly spread the word. That's why it was nice to see the NRA last summer shoot down one of the more absurd rumors that's been making the rounds: that the federal Department of Homeland Security and other agencies are hoarding massive stockpiles of ammunition for secret, nefarious purposes.

How safe has the Afghan war left us?
It's hard to see any way we could have avoided Afghanistan after the 9/11 attacks. We couldn't, after all, just leave al-Qaida ensconced in the country's hinterlands while Taliban chief Mullah Mohammed Omar sheltered its leaders. But in the back of our minds, we all probably had the same nagging worry: that regardless of how the Afghanistan effort went, it could never make the U.S. completely secure from terrorism.
