SUNY Oneonta student, 22, dies in off-campus residence

Cause of Mark DeRoziere's death undetermined pending coroner's report

ONEONTA — A SUNY Oneonta student died in his off-campus residence Thursday night, according to college officials.

Mark DeRoziere, 22, of Schoharie was found unresponsive by another SUNY Oneonta student sometime after 9 p.m. yesterday at an East Street apartment, according to a SUNY Oneonta media release. The Oneonta police and emergency personnel from the Oneonta Fire Department responded to the apartment, where DeRoziere, a junior at the college, was declared dead.

The cause of death is undetermined, pending a coroner's report.

SUNY Oneonta officials contacted DeRoziere's family earlier today. His housemates have been notified. Members of the college's counseling staff also were informed.

SUNY Oneonta President Nancy Kleniewski issued a campus-wide statement this morning.

"We are deeply saddened by the loss of Mark DeRoziere," she wrote. "The sympathy of our entire community is with his family and friends. The college has reached out to them to offer our condolences."
