Street Talk for October 19, 2009

Question of the week: What are you doing to save on home heating costs this year?

“The owner of my building pays the heating bill, but I still won’t turn it on until it really starts to snow. I just wrap myself up until I really need to turn it on. When it’s 50 degrees inside, it’s still considered warm when it’s 30 degrees outside.”

— Chava Granett, file clerk, Oneonta

“We turned it on last week, like a lot of people did. I still feel like it’s too early, but this weather has been difficult to plan. We have all our windows sealed off so there won’t be any cold air getting through, and we recently switched to more efficient heating. My husband has been great at making sure our house is ready for this winter.”

— Fran Wiedeman, youth director, Oneonta

“We had our first frost about two weeks ago, and that’s when we decided to turn on the heat. We’re planning on insulating the house to save on costs because last year we used a lot of fuel as a result of not having good insulation.”

— Mindy Demoney, stay-athome mom, Sidney Center

“I have natural-gas heating through NYSEG, so it’s a part of the electric bill. I don’t have to do much to winterize my home, though I do stay conscious of what the temperature it’s set at _ the bill can show extreme variations from season to season. But as of recently, I’ve been focusing more on winterizing my car than my home.”

— Dr. Steve Walsh, college professor, Oneonta

“We just turned our heat on, actually. We have fuel oil. But before we did that, we made sure to insulate the whole house _ all the windows, all the doors. I recently moved out here to be with my dad, so this is sort of new to me. I never had to worry about heating costs before.”

— Josh Hahn, unemployed, Portland, Ore.

“I turned my heat on last week when it got really cold out. When my 13- year-old says he’s cold, he’ll put on a sweatshirt or I’ll tell him to do some housework, so we do what we can to keep the costs low.”

— Janice Hinkley, outreach coordinator, Oneonta
