Street Talk for October 12, 2009

Question of the week: What do you think of the state’s ban on residents burning trash in barrels?

“I don’t see anything wrong with it. If you own your own property, sure, why not burn your garbage if you want to? I don’t see why there is a ban on it.”

— Leroy Ford, A-Operator at Healthcare Waste Solutions, Virgin Islands/Oneonta

“I can understand the need for a ban if you burn it too close to the road. I don’t see how it really matters though, it’s not like anyone is hurting anything.”

— Fred Davis, pizza guy, Long Island

“I don’t have an issue with it. I don’t burn anything though. I think people will still do it, but they will end up trying to hide it instead. The ban will increase our landfills.”

— Kelly Bates, nurse, Oneonta

“I used to burn my garbage. I don’t see what’s wrong with it if you do it the right time of year. Some people don’t think about it and burn during the dry season. They should ban for certain months of the year.”

— John Tubbs, nurse, Hobart

“I come from an area that never did that. So I think the ban is a good idea. It keeps pollution down. I think a farm should be able to, places with like 200 acres or something. I don’t think residential areas should, though.”

— Richy Layman, retail, Norwich

“I used to have a burn barrel. I’m against the ban because everyone will end up throwing all of their garbage in a landfill anyway.”

— Karl Cater, machinist, Esperance
