---- — The Associated Press news story (The Daily Star, Jan. 14) highlighting the financial firepower of the National Rifle Association is right on the money — as far as the story goes.
It is no secret that the NRA has millions of dollars in its political war chest — millions to bankroll election campaigns, millions to sway legislators, millions to punish dissent. This is old, reported time and again, much to the satisfaction of the gun lobby.
Here is an interesting addendum to the AP story. In last November’s elections, the NRA spent $11.8 million to defeat President Obama. The NRA lost. It spent $3.4 million on six key Senate races. It lost in each one.
The NRA is not invincible. It just needs us to believe that it is.
