ONEONTA — Charlotte N. Jester, 80, of Oneonta, passed away Monday, Dec. 17, 2012, at her home.
She was born Aug. 7, 1932, in Oneonta the daughter of the late Louis and Matilda Driggs.
Charlotte married Wayne F. Jester in 1951, in Oneonta. Wayne predeceased her on Dec. 23, 2000.
Charlotte was a lifelong area resident. For many years she worked at the Oneonta Daily Star in the classified advertising department. Following her retirement from the newspaper, Charlotte then went to work for a short period at City Hall.
While her children were growing up, Charlotte was a homemaker and was active in the PTA and enjoyed her son’s Little League games, family trips and going to Saratoga to the races with her husband. She was a lifelong avid reader and greatly enjoyed her neighborhood friends, several of whom still live in the same houses they’ve had since 1954, when she and Wayne moved to be near the Valleyview Elementary School for their children.
Charlotte was a loving mother and grandmother who was so proud of her five grandsons and will be deeply missed.
Charlotte is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Diane and William Bookhout of Cazenovia; her son and daughter-in-law, Douglas F. and Belinda Jester of Greensboro, N.C.; five grandchildren, Brooks and Jaclyn Jester, Daniel and Jennifer Bookhout, Benjamin Bookhout and Matthew and Samuel Jester; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Donald and Dolores Jester, Richard and Joan Jester, Rodney and Evelyn Jester, Nancy Jester, Edith Jester, George Wetmore, Nancy and William Rasmussen and Betsy Squaires; nephew, Jack Kirk; her niece, Alice Kirk; as well as several other nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by two brothers, Francis and Edward Driggs; one sister, Olive Cower; two brothers-in-law, Bruce and Warren Jester; and three sisters-in-law, Sally Jester, Eunice Jester Bush and Beverly Wetmore.
Calling hours will be held from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 22, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta. Funeral services will immediately follow at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Mel Farmer, pastor of the River Street Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in the Ouleout Valley Cemetery, Franklin.
