COOPERSTOWN -- Julia Catherine Gil, 98, of Cooperstown died Friday, June 29, 2012, at Bassett Medical Center.

Julia was born on April 17, 1914, in Bridgeport, Conn. She accepted a nursing position at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital and moved to Cooperstown in the mid-1930s. She married Jose T. Gil on Nov. 24, 1940, at St. Mary's "Our Lady of the Lake" Roman Catholic Church in Cooperstown. They resided for many years at 27 Pioneer St., and more recently at the Clara Welch Thanksgiving Home on Grove Street in Cooperstown.

Julia is survived by her three daughters, Marie Dolores Gil of Kingston, Jo-Ann Gil Birkland of Palm Bay, Fla., and Veronica Gil Seaver of Cooperstown; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband in 2004 and by her son, Jose Tomas Gil Jr., in 1982.

She was a devout communicant of St. Mary's "Our Lady of the Lake" Catholic Church where she taught Catechism classes for many years, and she was a member of Cooperstown Native Daughters. Julia loved to garden, cook and bake and was a meticulous homemaker. She loved to travel and especially enjoyed her numerous trips, often with friends, to Europe and Spain to visit family and friends. She was known to many as "the nurse of lower Pioneer Street" because of all the loving care and attention she gave to her neighbors and friends.

Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Monday July 2, 2012, at St. Mary's "Our Lady of the Lake" Roman Catholic Church in Cooperstown, with Fr. John P. Rosson, pastor and Fr. John R. Roos, pastor emeritus, as co-celebrants. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Index. The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. on Sunday July 1, 2012, at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home, 28 Pioneer St., Cooperstown.

In lieu of flowers, friends are invited to make donations in Julia's memory to either the Clara Welch Thanksgiving Home "Residents' Activity Fund" 48 Grove St., Cooperstown, NY 13326 or to the Cooperstown Food Bank, 25 Church St., Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Arrangements are under the supervision of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown.
