Edward E. Gallagher
ONEONTA _ Edward E. Gallagher, 80, died peacefully on Sunday, Aug. 5, 2012, after an extended illness.
He was born in Oneonta on Sept. 22, 1931, the son of the late John H. and Margaret (Carless) Gallagher. He married Dorothy Hotaling on Jan. 26, 1974, in Oneonta, and she predeceased him on Aug. 16, 2007.
Ed graduated from Oneonta High School in 1950. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. Following the war, Ed returned to Oneonta where he worked for West End Brewery for 20 years. He later worked as a security officer for Hartwick College where he was employed for 25 years.
Ed was predeceased by two brothers, John and Charles; and two sisters, Mary Smith and Katherine Reilly.
He is survived by two sisters, Patricia (Ted) Gorton of Venice, Fla., and Rosalie Pollman of Syracuse; three stepgrandchildren, Jessica, Torrey and Daryl; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Ed was especially thankful for the help during his illness of his nephew, Robert Hobkirk.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at noon on Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2012, in St. Mary's Church, 39 Walnut St., Oneonta. Interment will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Emmons. Friends may call from 10 until 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta at which time the family will be in attendance.
As per Ed's request, in lieu of flowers, donations in his name may be made to either the Catskill Area Hospice, 1 Birchwood Drive, Oneonta, NY 13820 or the All Saints Elementary School, 112 South Wilbur Ave., Syracuse, NY 13204.
