Mildred E. Thoms

BAINBRIDGE -- Mildred E. Thoms, 93, of Bainbridge, died suddenly on Friday, July 27, 2012.

Born on Oct. 16, 1918, in Deposit, Mildred was the eldest of four children born to Deforest and Bertha (Frazier) Crawford. On Dec. 24, 1935, she married Paul E. Thoms in McClure. Together they had eight children.

Mildred held several jobs in Bainbridge over the years. She worked as a clerk in Lockwood's, the Victory and Howland's Garden Food Store. She also worked for American Plastics, in the cafeteria at Bainbridge-Guilford Central School and as a caregiver for the elderly. She was perhaps most suited to the job of mother and grandmother. She was never too busy to lend an ear, a shoulder to lean on or a hug. Her hands were never idle. When they weren't sewing, embroidering, knitting or crocheting, they were busy baking cookies, cinnamon rolls, and, oh, those pies.

Mildred was predeceased by her husband of 59 years, Paul; her children, Richard, Clysta and Leon; great-granddaughter, Amanda Newton; her sister, Edna Lehman; and brothers, Jonus and Dayton Crawford.

Surviving are daughters Pauline (Pete) Stoutenberg, Robin Wilson and Alison Thoms; sons, Kenneth (Betty) Thoms and Lee (Patti) Thoms; 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Friends are invited to call from 2 to 3 p.m. Friday, Aug. 3, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney. A memorial service will follow at 3 p.m. at the funeral chapel with the Rev. Fred Albrecht officiating. Burial will be later at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice & Palliative Care of Chenango County, 21 Hayes St., Norwich, NY 13815 or to the charity of one's choice. Condolences may be sent to the family online at www.landersfh.com.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, Sidney.
