FRANKLIN -- Clifton W. Whitbeck, 86, formerly of Franklin, died Monday, July 30, 2012, at Chase Memorial Nursing Home, New Berlin.

He was born June 14, 1926, in Franklin, the son of Leonard and Marguerite (Thomas) Whitbeck. He married Mary E. Davis on Sept.17, 1949. She predeceased him on Feb. 27, 2000, after 50 years of marriage.

Cliff was employed as a maintenance mechanic at Breakstones in Walton for 31 years before retiring in 1988.

He loved the outdoors and enjoyed farming, gardening and going to auctions. He held a special place in his heart for his grandchildren.

He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Robin Whitbeck of Unadilla; daughter and son-in-law, Gloria and Jack Callahan of Unadilla; and daughter-in-law, Barbara Whitbeck of Schenevus; four sisters, Margaret VanBuren of Walton, Laverna Maus of Roscoe, Eunice Whitbeck of Walton and Eileen VanLoan of Riceville, Tenn.; and a brother, Clifford Whitbeck of Franklin. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Brad Whitbeck, Rhonda Connelly, Bryan and Matthew Callahan, Jennifer Hojnacki and Jessica Rother; five great-grandchildren, Eli and Ava Rother, Jessica and Haylee Hojnacki and Ethan Connelly.

Cliff was predeceased in death by his sons, David W. Whitbeck and Thomas G. Whitbeck and a brother, Carlton G. Whitbeck.

There will be no calling hours. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 2, in the Ouleout Valley Cemetery, Franklin with Judy McCall officiating.

The family thanks the staff at Chase Memorial Nursing Home for the wonderful care given to "Grandpa" as he was affectionately called by the staff.
