UNADILLA _ James F. Ludwig, longtime resident of Unadilla, passed away on Saturday, July 14, 2012, at the New York State Veterans Home in Oxford.

Jim was born on Sept. 11, 1923, in Oneonta, as the eldest child of Alexander and Elva Ludwig of Oneonta.

Jim served as a Flight Navigator in the United States Army Air Corps in World War II working on many missions over Italy and North Africa.

On Aug. 5, 1944, he married his sweetheart, Florence Smith while in Texas. After an honorable discharge in October 1944, they moved to Unadilla and Jim lived there until moving to the veterans home after suffering a stroke in May 2011.

Jim attended the University of Cincinnati to study engineering and worked as an engineer at Bendix/Scintilla (Martin Marietta/Amphenol) in Sidney for 44 years.

Jim was an active member of the Unadilla community serving on Town Council, Town Water Board and other roles through the years. He was a member of the Masons, American Legion, Stamp Club among others.

He helped build and found the Buckhorn Lake Association and in recent years maintained the records for the Evergreen Cemetery, Unadilla. Jim was an Elder and active member of the First Presbyterian Church, Unadilla over 60 years.

Jim is survived by his son, Bobby Ludwig of Unadilla and New Berlin; his daughter, Kathryn (Brien) David of Greene; five grandchildren, Ethan of Norwich, Alyssa, Amy, Jessica and Anna David of Greene; a brother, Robert (Gail) Ludwig of Parkville; a sister, Ann Kurtz of Camillus; a brother-in-law, Walter Slade of Galway; son-in-law, Carl Della Peruti of Plainfield, N.J.; and numerous nephews and nieces.

Jim was predeceased by his wife, Florence, who died in 1999; and a sister, Claire, who died in 2010.

Jim was loved and appreciated by his family, and was cremated according to his wishes.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, July 30, 2012, from the First Presbyterian Church, Unadilla. Friends may call at the church from 10 to 11 a.m. prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, it is requested contributions be made to the charity of one's choice or the First Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box Z, Unadilla, NY 13849.
