Florence C. Hitt
SHERBURNE — Florence C. Hitt, 86, of Sherburne, passed away on Oct. 16, 2012, in Chenango Memorial Hospital. She was born on Oct. 14, 1926, in Ithaca, N.Y., the daughter of the late Ray and Mabel (Brown) Smith. She was married to Ellwyn Hill from 1942 to 1959. She then married Earl P. Hitt Sr., who passed away in 2001.
She had worked as a home care aide for the William Waldorf family for several years. She had also worked at the Norwich Shoe Company, TACO, The Bluebird Restaurant, The Lincoln Hotel in Binghamton and was a cook in Whitney Point. She was a member of Sherburne Post 876, American Legion Auxiliary. She was known for her baking and cooking abilities, especially her molasses cookies. Her family was a very large part of her life, with whom she loved to play pitch and dice. She also enjoyed crocheting.
She is survived by her children, Carrie and Archie Church of Tellico Plains, Tenn., Dorothy and Paul Crandall of Sherburne, Martha King and companion, Clyde Smith of Oxford, Elaine (Kate) and David DeBlock of Sherburne, James and Helen Hill of Norwich, Pat and Terry Quinn of Tellico Plains, TN and Earl Jr. and Michele Hitt, of Sherburne; her sister, Dorothy and Melvin (Doc) Manwarren of Norwich; 30 grandchildren, 61 great-grandchildren, eight great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, Oct. 19, 2012, at 4 p.m. at the Behe Funeral Home, 21 Main St., Oxford, NY with the Rev. Allen C. Lang, pastor of the United Church of Oxford officiating. Burial will follow in Riverview Cemetery, Oxford.
