---- — Ethel M. (Peckham) Gustin
MANORKILL — Ethel M. (Peckham) Gustin died Friday, Feb. 1, 2013, at Robinson Terrace Nursing Facility in Stamford, where she had lived for the last two years.
Ethel was born Nov. 22, 1925, in Mount Vernon, to William and Florence (Simonson) Peckham.
She attended Mount Vernon schools but was particularly proud of having attended Edison High School.
She married John Gustin on June 1, 1946. While raising her family she lived in Tuckahoe, and attended Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church.
Besides raising and being very involved in the lives of her four children, Ethel was very community spirited and volunteered as a Girl Scout leader, Cub Scout leader, and volunteered for many church organizations.
Ethel made time for everyone and everything no matter “how full her own plate” was. Ethel will always be remembered for her love of books and reading from the classics right down to her Enquirer!
Ethel was extremely proud of her Irish heritage and St. Patty’s Day was the highpoint of her year. She also had a great love for New York City, where she started working for MetLife in the 1940s.
Ethel started her lifetime of volunteering, even as young as she was, going after work to The Foundling where she took care of orphan infants.
New York City always held an enchantment for her and when she could no longer make the trip herself, she would tell us “Say hello for me.”
Ethel continued her career working for many years for Liberty Mutual Insurance. She “retired” to the Catskill Mountain (Manorkill) with her husband, John, in 1979.
Ethel will be remembered with love by her four children, Cathy (John) Riedl, Conesville, Marybeth Baily, New Rochelle, John Gustin of Carmel, and Joan Fodera of Cape May Courthouse, N.J. Also by her two sisters, Peggy Bresson, Mount Vernon, and Helen Bigger, Cortlandt Manor; her sister-in-law, Dorothy (John) Reuter, Otego; and a brother-in-law, Joseph (Melda) Gustin, Manorkill; and a sister-in-law, Jean Peckham, Tuckahoe. She is also survived by eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and many beloved nieces and nephews.
Ethel was predeceased by her husband, John, in 2002; and her grandson, Robert in the same year. She was also predeceased by her sister, Bette Gustin; and her brother, William Peckham; two sons-in-law, Robert Bailey and Robert Fodera.
