Daniel (Dan) Colby Tait

SPRING HILL, Fla. _ Daniel (Dan) Colby Tait, 86 years old, died Feb. 13, 2012, at his home after a long and brave battle with cancer.

Born Jan. 31, 1926, in Roxbury, Daniel lived most of his life in Delaware County. His parents, George R. Tait (deceased) and Lucy M. Gregory (deceased) lived in Grand Gorge, while Daniel was growing up. Dan left school in January of 1944, to enlist in the U.S. Air Force. He was honorably discharged in November of 1945.

On Sept. 9, 1948, Dan married Margaret L. Rose (deceased). They had four sons, Richard Tait, Robert Tait, Dennis Tait, and David Tait (deceased). In 1979, he married Genevieve A. Dibble.

An avid sportsman, he and his father, George Tait, took his sons hunting and fishing in Delaware County. He had a sincere belief in conservation and practiced what he preached his whole life. While he lived in Grand Gorge, Dan owned and operated Dan Tait Inc. for many years. He remodeled kitchens and baths and sold appliances. He went to school and obtained his certificate as a Certified Kitchen Designer.

At retirement, he sold his business to Richard and Robert and moved to Florida. He and Genevieve lived on the water. Dan realized a lifelong dream and became a licensed ship's captain. As well as being a caring and devoted family man, Dan was civic minded and joined many organizations in the areas where he lived. One of his main affiliations was with the church.

Dan is survived by Genevieve, his wife; Richard, Robert and Dennis, his sons; Elia, Chalya, Carrara, Erin, Jessica, Jennifer and Theresa, his granddaughters; and Lamaiya, his great-granddaughter.

A memorial graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 19, 2012, in the Grand Gorge Cemetery, with a gathering to follow at the house of Richard Tait.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations made to the American Cancer Society.
