John F. Spadora Sr.
LOWVILLE _ John F. Spadora Sr. of Lowville, formerly of Franklin, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2012, at the Lewis County Residential Health Center in Lowville.
He was born Feb. 20, 1921, in Brooklyn, the son of John and Catherine (Mulligan) Spadora.
He was married to the former Helen Popovich on June 28, 1947. She died in May of 2011.
John lived in Oceanside before moving to Franklin in 1976. In 2008, he moved to Lowville to be near his son, Peter and his family.
He had been Town of Sidney Republican Party Chairman and Committee Member, member of the Franklin Blue Lodge F and AM, the Unadilla Chapter, Oneonta Council and attended the Walton Free and Accepted Masons and was Cooperstown Commandare.
John was district director of Delaware County Soil and Water Conservation District, vice president of the New York State Conservation District Association as well as N.Y.S. Representative Susquehanna Basin Commission. He was also a member of the Superior Offices of NYPD and the National Retired and Disabled Police Officers Association. John served in World War II as a Seaman 1st Class with the U.S. Coast Guard. He enjoyed gardening and loved nature.
John is survived by two sons and their wives, John F. Spadora Jr. (Janet) and Peter J. Spadora (Gloria); one brother, James C. Spadora; and a sister, Ronnie Baird; four grandchildren, Peter Jr., Derek, John III, and Jesse Spadora; and a great-grandchild, Miranda Rose Spadora.
He was predeceased by a brother, Harry Braunreuther; and a sister, Patricia Rumovicz.
A Mass of Catholic burial will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 13, 2012, at Sacred Heart Church in Sidney.
Friends may call at the Westcott Funeral Home Inc., Unadilla from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 12, 2012, when the family will be in attendance. Interment will be in Union Church Cemetery, East Sidney.
