George L. Eggler

ONEONTA _ George L. Eggler, 80, passed away Sunday, Sept. 2, 2012, at the New York State Veterans Home in Oxford, surrounded by his family.

He was born May 2, 1932, in Oneonta, the son of Walter and Millicent (Whitney) Eggler.

He graduated from Oneonta High School, Class of 1950.

George married Phyllis Hawver on Nov. 10, 1950, in Oneonta.

He was a United States Navy veteran serving in the Korean Conflict.

George was employed by NYSEG with Utility Construction Maintenance, retiring after 35 years.

He was a member of the Oneonta American Legion Post 259. He was a Civil War buff and was an avid woodcraftsman, he enjoyed carving, chair caning, leather tooling and was very artistic.

He was proud of the ribbons he won each year at the Wightman's Lumber Competition. George also enjoyed playing his harmonica.

He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Eggler of Oneonta; three children, Sharon and Cliff Costello of Endwell, Gayle and John Heller of Oneonta, and George "Chip" Eggler and Evando Macario of Stratford, Conn.; grandchildren, Betsy (Jason) Wilcox, TJ (Kerstin) Sullivan, Sarah Sullivan and Tony Ciacola, Geoffrey (Morgan) Sullivan, John Heller and Jennifer Kilts, and Michael (Erika) Heller; great-grandchildren, Nadine Sullivan, AJ and Matt Wilcox, Lennox Sullivan, Donovan and Maddox Heller; a special aunt "sister," Doris Gula; and several cousins.

Calling hours were held from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2012, at the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

The funeral service will be 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 6, 2012, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Judith Thistle, officiating. Interment with military honors will follow in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 140 County Highway 33W, Cooperstown, NY 13326 or to the New York State Veterans Home, 4207 State Highway 220, Oxford, NY 13830.
