Hartwick hires volleyball coach

Hartwick College has hired James Clar as its women's volleyball coach, the college announced Tuesday.

Clar, who played Division I volleyball at the University of Hawaii, takes over for longtime coach Lou Lansing, who announced her retirement in July. Clar becomes the third coach in the program's history.

"Hartwick is very privileged to have a new volleyball coach the caliber of James Clar," Hawks athletic director Kim Fierke said. "He will bring strong leadership and energy to the program. Hartwick volleyball is in very capable hands and James is a great addition to our staff."

The last three seasons, Clar served as an assistant coach at Nazareth College, which, like Hartwick, plays in the Empire 8 Conference. Last season, Nazareth went 24-12, won its first Empire 8 Conference title and made its first appearance in the NCAA Division III tournament in six years.

At Hawaii, Clar led his team in kills and points per game as a junior.

He also played semi-pro beach volleyball the past three years.

"I am truly honored and excited to be the new head volleyball coach at Hartwick College," Clar said. "I appreciate the opportunity and really look forward to getting in the gym with our players."

He inherits a program that finished 13-20 last season. Hartwick returns 11 players from a season ago.

The Hawks start the season Aug. 31 at the Oneonta State Invitational.
