Undrafted Simonds signs with Eagles

SIDNEY — By Rob Centorani

Staff Writer

Though Sidney graduate Pat Simonds did not hear his name called during the three-day NFL draft, the former Colgate wide receiver hooked on with the Philadelphia Eagles about 20 minutes after it ended Saturday.

Simonds signed a priority free agent contract with the Eagles and will report later this week for a three-day camp at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa.

“From a pride standpoint, you’d like to hear your name called during the draft,” Simonds said, “but I was advised prior to the draft that if it gets to the seventh round, you’re better off to be a free agent pick because then you get to pick your situation.”

The Eagles list 71 players on their roster, and that doesn’t include the nine priority free agents they signed after the draft. All NFL rosters must be cut to 53 players before the regular season starts.

According to the USA TODAY, the league minimum salary in 2007 was $285,000.
