Big fourth quarter propels SK boys

Trevor Holdridge finished with 13 points and held Roxbury's Kyle Ciaravino scoreless in the fourth quarter of South Kortright's 68-48 Delaware League boys basketball victory over visiting Roxbury on Friday.

Ciaravino scored all of his game-high 27 points during the first three quarters. He was a big reason why the Rockets trailed, 43-41, heading into the fourth quarter.

"Ciaravino had an absolutely great game," Rams coach Bob VanValkenburgh said of the Roxbury senior, who scored his varsity-high of 29 points Wednesday in the Rockets' 58-41 win over Gilboa. "It was one of the better performances I've seen all year. He hit three threes, went 8-for-8 from the line, he got to the rim on us ... he was doing a little bit of everything."

VanValkenburgh switched to a box-and-one in the fourth quarter with Holdridge as the chaser on Ciaravino. Not only did Holdridge keep Ciaravino scoreless over the final eight minutes, he scored nine points as the Rams outscored Roxbury, 25-7.

"It was a lot better game than the score indicates," said VanValkenburgh, whose team will take a 16-1 record into Friday's Delaware League title game against Hunter-Tannersville at SUNY Delhi.

Brandon Tuttle had a team-high 23 points, including a 13-for-16 performance at the line for SK. Tuttle scored eight points in the fourth quarter. Jesse Boest and Sage Beemer and 12 and 10 points, respectively, for the Rams.

"I told the kids afterward it's always good to get a pressure game," VanValkenburgh said, "just to see what you're made of."

Reno Romito had 16 points, six assists, four rebounds and three steals, and Tyler Kelaher contributed 10 points and eight rebounds as host Hunter-Tannersville cruised to a Delaware League victory.

The Wildcats (16-1) led, 33-10, at halftime against a Davenport squad that played without standout forward Robert Meyerhoff, who suffered a season-ending right knee injury last week.

"He's a strong kid in the middle and everything went through him," H-T coach Chris Glennon said of Meyerhoff.

H-T will play South Kortright on Friday in the Delaware League crossover final. The same teams met last season, with the Rams winning by a slim margin.

"We beat them here by a point," Glennon said of the teams' regular season meeting. "I remember saying at the time it was a classic game. Obviously, we look forward to another one next Friday. I talked to my players. I told them it'll be a chess match. It'll depend how Bobby (VanValkenburgh) and I move the pieces."

Oneonta 67, Lansing 53

Mike Calkins scored 23 points and Bryce Wooden had 17 as Oneonta High won a non-league game at home.

Calkins hit a team-best nine field goals and took Oneonta's only foul shots, going 5-for-8 at the line.

"Our advantage was inside," OHS coach Jerry Mackey said. "They have some size, but they were ninth- and 10th-graders. We should have taken advantage of that and we did."

Four other OHS players scored as Sean Getman had eight points, Ben Payton scored seven and Ryne Rivino and David Wright finished with six apiece. Getman, Wright and Rivino each hit two three-pointers for the Jackets (11-6), who received one apiece from Wooden and Payton.

"Getman's shooting the ball great," said Mackey, whose team took a 33-25 lead into halftime. "If he does that (consistently), he's the third or fourth scorer we need."

Ellington Hopkins paced Lansing with 32 points, on 10 field goals and a 9-for-10 effort at the foul line.

"Their strength was their point guard," Mackey said of Ellington, who sank three threes. "He's as good as anyone we've had in the gym this year."

Oneonta will play another Interscholastic Athletic Conference team at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, when the Jackets visit Marathon.

Michael Moakler's game-high 19 points paced five Cooperstown players who scored at least eight points as the visiting Redskins completed their regular season with a 17-1 record.

Jeff Flynn scored 14 points, including two three-pointers in the first quarter, when Cooperstown took a 12-10 lead.

"He's gained a lot of confidence over the last couple of weeks," Cooperstown coach David Bertram said of Flynn.

Harrison Clinton (10 points) then hit two three-pointers in the second quarter, when Cooperstown enjoyed a 23-14 advantage. The Redskins followed that by outscoring the Marauders, 24-8, in the third quarter.

"Defensively, in the third quarter, we settled down and kept the ball in front of us," Bertram said. "Our inside guys were defending the basket if they got past our guards. A lot of our hounding led to transition and that's where we want to be."

The Redskins, who won the Center State Conference's Division III title with a 10-0 record, will scrimmage Oneonta on Monday and likely will start play in the Section Three Class C tournament the following Friday.

Thane Weigl received an unfriendly roll just before buzzer that allowed Tri-Valley League West Division champion Morris to escape with league win at Laurens.

Weigl scored a game-high 11 points. With Laurens trailing by 35-33, Weigl split two defenders and drove the right side of the lane. The ball hit off the glass and then the front of rim and bounced away with .2 seconds left.

"I'm very pleased," said Laurens coach Andy Carr, whose team ends the season at 4-12. "It was Senior Night and our kids knew we were going to sectionals. They could have laid down, but they went hard from the tip-off to the final buzzer. I couldn't be happier."
