Cooperstown girls earn share of division title

Not only will Cooperstown take a 15-3 record into the Section Three Class C-2 tournament next week, the Redskins also are getting healthier.

The Redskins' girls basketball team defeated visiting Waterville, 63-29, and earned the co-championship in Division III of the Center State Conference on Friday. Cooperstown and Hamilton each finished with 9-1 league records.

Sumer Murdock, Alexis Bloomfield and Meghan Vann scored 11 points apiece for Cooperstown, which took control with a 23-9 run in the second quarter. Murdock, Bloomfield and Vann combined for 16 points in the quarter, which ended with Cooperstown ahead, 34-18.

Perhaps a more positive sign for Cooperstown was that Katelynn Kiuber and Maggie Hall scored four and five points, respectively. Kiuber recently returned from an injured right ankle that kept her out of the lineup for most of the season. Hall made her first appearance of the season after recovering from hip surgery.

"They would have been competing for starting positions," Cooperstown coach Mike Niles said. "Having Katelynn back makes a huge difference defensively and Maggie probably would have 15-20 threes this season. It's certainly encouraging having them back and it added to the atmosphere."

Cooperstown, which received 10 points from Nicole Cring, honored seniors Holli Erkson, Vann and Kiuber before the game.

Niles said he expects his team will be seeded second for the C-2 tournament that starts next week.

Cooperstown's junior varsity team finished the season at 17-1.
