Hartwick water polo wins 300th

Hartwick College's 13th-ranked women's water polo went 2-1 Saturday, including the program's 300th victory.

The Hawks opened their season with a 20-5 loss to seventh-ranked UC-Irvine but bounced back with a 14-11 overtime win against No. 20 CSU-Northridge in games played at Riverside, Calif. They capped the day with a 14-9 triumph at the University of Redlands, marking their 300th win.

According to a media release sent by the school, Hartwick is the second team since the modern era began in 2001 to amass 300 wins. Michigan, with 316, is the other.

In the loss to Irvine, Sami Capparelli scored twice, and Alison Kosich, Natialie Seabourn and Anna Zdolsek also scored for Hartwick.

Hartwick held an 11-2 lead against Northridge before the Matadors scored nine straight goals to force overtime. In the extra session, Sasha Freeborn scored twice and Jemma Dendy Young had one goal to lift Hartwick. Lily Martinez had three goals, and Capparelli, Freeborn and Dendy Young finished with two apiece.

No scoring information was available on Hartwick's win over Redlands. The Hawks travel to eighth-ranked San Diego State at 3 p.m. Thursday.

MEN'S BASKETBALL

Hartwick 59, Elmira 52

Sophomore Jared Suderley scored 25 points on 11-for-20 shooting for host Hartwick, which reached 20 wins for the first time since the 1991-92 season by beating winless Elmira in the Empire 8 Conference on Saturday.

Defending E8 champion Hartwick (20-2, 9-2) also received 15 points and seven rebounds from Chris Ryder.

"Anytime you win 20 games in Division III it's a huge accomplishment," Hartwick coach Todd McGuinness said in a media release. "I'm really proud of my team."

Elmira (0-22, 0-11) was led by Josh Keys' 14 points. Oneonta High graduate Dan O'Brien _ The Daily Star's Player of the Year in 2008 _ and Chris Cassidy had 10 points apiece.

The Soaring Eagles pulled to 51-48 on a layup by O'Brien with 4 minutes, 43 seconds left.

But Hartwick answered with an inside basket by Suderley, two free throws apiece from Andres Carpio and Mike Geisser, and a jumper from Ryder to seal it.

Laurens graduate Aaron Laing made both of his shots from the field for Hartwick. He finished with five points and four rebounds. Laing is shooting 63 percent from the floor (31-for-49) on the season.

On Friday, host Hartwick avenged an earlier loss to Alfred University, winning 64-63.

Suderley had 22 points and eight rebounds, and Anthony Keane had 16 points and four steals. Laing contributed seven points and six rebounds. He shot 3-for-3 from the floor and 1-for-1 from the line.

Alfred (13-7, 5-5) had possession down by a point but threw a pass away on its final possession.

Hartwick travels to Nazareth at 8 p.m. Friday.

Geneseo 67, O-State 57

Junior Nick Sarchioto scored his college high of 21 points, but visiting Oneonta State lost in the SUNY Athletic Conference on Saturday.

The Red Dragons (2-19) fell to 1-13 in conference play.

A Sarchioto jumper pulled O-State to 47-45 with 7 1/2 minutes left, but O-State got no closer.

Geneseo (10-10, 8-5) outscored the Red Dragons, 38-16, in the paint.

Dan McLaren had 14 points, and Dan Lee and Frankie Kelly contributed 11 apiece for O-State, which plays host to Oswego at 8 p.m. Friday.

Lancaster Bible 82, Cobleskill 63

Alexis Nunez had 14 points and five assists, and Brendan Doherty contributed 12 points and five assists for host SUNY Cobleskill, which lost Saturday in the North Eastern Athletic Conference.

Doherty was named the Fighting Tigers athlete of the week.

Cobleskill (2-19, 2-9) plays host to SUNYIT at 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Delhi 64, Clinton 53

Quayshaun Mitchell finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds to lead host SUNY Delhi to a Mountain Valley Conference victory Sunday.

"I give a lot of credit to Clinton," Delhi coach Rob Schoener said. "They didn't play like a 5-17 team."

Jonathan Hurtado contributed 12 points, six rebounds and three blocks for the Broncos (21-4, 11-2), who received 10 points from John Brown.

Delhi visits Mohawk Valley (17-4) for a rematch of the 2011 NJCAA Division III Region III championship game at 7 p.m. Tuesday. The Broncos, who beat MV earlier this season, won last year's regional title, 78-77, in overtime.

Delhi 64, Clinton 53

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

Hartwick 59, Elmira 52

The host Hawks ended Saturday's Empire 8 Conference game on a 9-0 run over the last 2 minutes, 54 seconds.

Sophomore Maria Foglia had a game-high 21 points and a team-high nine rebounds to lead the Hawks (18-3, 10-1), who remain in a first-place tie with Ithaca. Hartwick's 18 victories are its most since the 1999-2000 season.

Jessica Zoltwoski gave the Soaring Eagles (8-14, 4-7) a 52-50 lead on two free throws with 3:41 to play.

Kate Purcell, who had 11 points, six rebounds, five steals and four assists, tied it on a layup with 2:54 left. Foglia, who went 10-for-10 from the line, then gave Hartwick the lead for keeps on two free throws with 1:37 to play.

Following a steal by Purcell, Foglia hit a jumper with 58 seconds remaining to make it 56-52.

The Hawks, winners of nine straight, travel to Albany College of Pharmacy at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

O-State 68, Geneseo 61

Madison Slagle scored 18 points as visiting Oneonta State rallied for a SUNY Athletic Conference victory.

The Red Dragons (14-6) improved to 12-2 in conference and hold a half-game lead over Buffalo State, which is 11-2.

Geneseo (12-8, 7-6) led, 56-55, on a pair of free throws by Bri Dunton, but Slagle converted a three-point play and O-State went 8-for-10 from the line in the closing minutes to seal it.

Samantha Szkotak scored 12 points, Kelly Mulligan contributed 11, and Sarah Longto had seven points and 10 rebounds for the Red Dragons, who play host Oswego at 6 p.m. Friday. The Lakers won the first matchup against O-State, 55-49.

Lancaster Bible 55, Cobleskill 52

Down 20 with 9:21 remaining, host SUNY Cobleskill scored 18 straight points, but its rally fell short in the North Eastern Athletic Conference.

Sarah Heilenman hit a three-pointer late in the shot clock to give Lancaster a 55-50 lead with 12 seconds left.

Senior Chelcy Moore had 14 points, nine rebounds and three steals to lead the Fighting Tigers (11-9, 8-5), who host SUNYIT at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

WRESTLING

O-State goes 2-1

Oneonta State Plymouth State (33-13) and Williams College (36-14) and lost to host Wesleyan (21-10) to complete its dual meet schedule for the season.

The Red Dragons finished at 9-9.

Sophomores Jake Smith, Dan Graff and Ben Mikac led the way for O-State. Smith (197 pounds) and Graff (157) went 3-0, and Mikac (133) went 2-1, both wins coming by pin.

O-State will next compete in the Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference tournament Feb. 25 at Brockport. The tournament serves as a qualifier for the NCAA Division III tournament.

SWIMMING

Hartwick swept

Hartwick's men suffered their first loss of the season, 106.5-101.5 at sixth-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology.

The Hawks, ranked 18th in Division III, finished the season at 16-1. Hartwick's women also lost, 163-97, to finish at 14-3.

Michael Phillips won two races for the Hawks, touching first in the 200-yard freestyle (1 minute, 44.35 seconds) and the 200 breaststroke (2:09.02). Nick Mosconi (200 mixed free), John Wojtech (100 breaststroke), Brad Ranson (100 free) and Matt Behn (mixed 100 free) also earned wins for Hartwick, which set a program record for victories.

Clare Nelson and Stephanie Ha earned wins for Hartwick's women.

Nelson placed first in the 200 breaststroke (2:32.77) and Ha did likewise in the 200 individual medley (2:13.59). The women also set a program record for victories.

Hartwick will compete in the Empire 8 Conference/UNYSCSA Championships on Feb. 22 at Webster.

Skidmore Invitational

SUNY Cobleskill's placed fifth out of six teams in the Skidmore Invitational on Saturday.

The Fighting Tigers finished with 11 points. Their 200 free relay team of Audrey Harper, Sarah Duger, Jamie Cooley and Erin Rynn finished seventh in school-record time of 1:55.68.

Cobleskill will compete in the North Eastern Athletic Conference meet from Feb. 16-18 at Cazenovia.

Indoor Track

Springfield Invitational

Senior Sarah Timmons broke her school record in the 20-pound weight throw by nearly 6 feet in leading Oneonta State at the Springfield College Invitational on Saturday.

Timmons' winning throw of 60 feet, 4 1/2 inches broke her previous record of 54-11 1/2. That distance also is ranked first among Division III athletes by close to 3 feet. She also placed third in the shot put at 37-4.

O-State's women placed fourth with 132 points. Springfield won with 175.

Freshman Kenya Outram placed second in the 60-meter hurdles (9.65 seconds) and the long jump (16-1), and third in the high jump (4-11).

O-State's men finished second with 121.5 points. Amherst won with 134.

Dustin Cox and Sean Bernstein earned wins for the Red Dragons. Cox cleared 6-1 1/4 to win the high jump and Bernstein won the 60 in 7.05 seconds.

O-State will send some competitors to Boston University and others to Cornell this weekend.

Bomber Invitational

Sophomore Miquel Garcia placed third in the 60-meter dash in an ECAC and NYSCTC qualifying time of 7.09 seconds to lead SUNY Cobleskill in the Bomber Invitational at Ithaca College.

The Fighting Tigers' Shorna Brown placed third in the high jump, clearing 5-foot-5.

Cobleskill will compete in the Robert J. Kane Invitational on Friday and Saturday at Cornell.

East Stroudsburg Invitational

Ian Kowalchuk's second-place finish in the 1,000 meters paced SUNY Delhi competitors in the East Stroudsburg Invitational on Saturday.

Kowalchuk finished in 2 minutes, 37.95 seconds.

The Broncos also received third-place efforts from Dylan Lowery and Tiyi Boone.

Lowry's came in the mile (4:26.13) and Boone's occurred in the triple jump (36 feet, 9 3/4 inches).
