Stallions win at buzzer, 26-25

Champen hits Tandle for four TDs

It took the New York Stallions 3.6 seconds to go from Oneonta to Cooperstown on Saturday.

Oneonta High graduate Noble Champen threw four touchdown passes to Cooperstown alumnus Mike Tandle, including the winner with no time left, as the Stallions edged the Glove-Cities Colonials, 26-25, in a Northeastern Football Alliance game at Hartwick College's Wright Stadium.

"I was announcing the game and almost swallowed the microphone," Stallions general manager Tom Terry said Sunday. "That's our best victory in my two years with the squad."

Terry said his third-year adult football team, which he owns with Del Anthony and Angela Eardley, faced a 25-20 deficit with 1 minute, 36 seconds left when it took over on downs at New York's 35-yard line. Jason Snow's fourth-down catch kept the drive alive and set up New York (2-2) at the Colonials' 32-yard line. Champen then threw three incomplete passes, leaving the Stallions with 3.6 seconds.

"Noble went back in the pocket and found Mike in the right corner of the end zone with no time left," said Terry, whose team improved to 2-0 at Hartwick this season. "Three players had a chance to catch it _ a couple of defenders and Mike _ and he came away with it."

Champen finished 15-for-21 for 256 passing yards and Tandle, who celebrated his 23rd birthday Saturday, had six catches for 169 yards. Jason Carnell contributed 56 receiving yards on six catches for the Stallions, who were tied at six at halftime and took a 13-12 lead into the fourth quarter.

"It was unbelievable," said Terry, who added the game drew about 300 fans.

Justin Burkhart's 10 tackles paced New York's defense, which helped drop Glove-Cities (2-2) into a three-way tie for third place in the East Division with the Stallions and the Cortland Bulldogs (2-2). First-place Troy (4-0) beat Utica, 56-7, in a battle of NFA unbeatens Saturday. The host Yard Dogs fell to 3-1.

The Stallions are off until July 9, when they will visit Utica.
