OHS girls win Class B track title

Oneonta High’s girls, behind wins in the 100- and 400-meter hurdles races by junior Jenn Jelic, won the Section Four Class B track title at home Thursday.

Jelic had personal-best times in both races, winning the 100 in 16.15 seconds and the 400 in 1:08.04. Jelic had just enough to hold off Owego’s Margot Springsteen in the 400. Springsteen finished with 1:08.58.

The Yellowjackets finished with 125 points, beating runner-up Dryden by 16.

“It was our balance,” OHS coach Dave Forbes said. “We only had two events where we didn’t score.”

Especially the high jump, where Brittney Herrick and Natalie Vanderlaan-Meyering finished 1-2. Herrick cleared her personal-best of 5-foot-1. Vanderlaan-Meyering also had a PR in the event, clearing 5-0. Those two, who stand 6-0 and 6-2, respectively, figure to form a formidable front line for OHS’ basketball team in the winter.

Eighth-grader Taylor Hitchcock, who won the 2,000 steeplechase Monday at Binghamton, placed second in the 3,000 in 10:59.46, her personal best.

OHS also received second-place finishes from Kim Scofield in the triple jump and Michelle-Lee St. Marthe in the discus. Scofield covered 33-7 3/4, falling by a quarter-inch to Susquehanna Valley’s Brianna Callahan. St. Marthe threw the discus 91-11.

OHS’ boys finished seventh out of 10 teams with 43 points. SV won with 109 1/2.

Levi Anderson finished second in the 3,200 in 10:21.39 and Aaron Murphy was second in the triple jump at 41-8 for OHS.

The Section Four State Qualifier is Thursday at Ithaca.
