Sidney's Stafford wins fifth MAC title

B-G/A finishes second to Greene; Fred Thomas paces OHS at STACs

Sidney senior Scott Stafford earned his fifth consecutive Midstate Athletic Conference wrestling championship Saturday at Afton, where host Bainbridge-Guilford/Afton earned three individual titles en route to the highest finish among area teams.

Stafford cruised to the 120-pound crown, following back-to-back pins with a 9-0 major decision over Unatego's Austin Ryan in their championship match.

Neither of Stafford's first two opponents made it through the first period. Stafford opened with a quarterfinal pin of B-G/A's Kevin Hubbard in 1 minute, 13 seconds and followed with a semifinal pin of Walton's Tom Caldarulo in 1:03.

That set up a title bout against Ryan, who also won his first two matches via pinfall. Ryan started with a 43-second pin of Unadilla Valley's Brandon Brown before winning his semifinal against Deposit's Jason Lobdell in 3:43.

Stafford's major decision over Ryan, a freshman who won the 112-pound MAC title last season and the 96-pound crown in 2010, marked the first of two Sidney crowns as Nicholas Jump clinched the 160-pound title with a 7-1 decision over Greene's Brett Ramsey.

Jump began his championship run with a 27-second pin of Deposit's Trevor Wright, then won an 11-5 semifinal decision over Ryan Marszal of Unatego.

Marszal fell, 12-2, to Stafford in the 119-pound championship as an eighth-grader last season. Marszal also lost, 16-5, to Stafford in the 2010 final at 103 pounds.

Justin Cirigliano (132 pounds), Mark Viviano (195) and Billy Holden (285) won titles for defending champion B-G/A, which finished second in the 10-team tournament with 138 points.

Greene, which competed with an incomplete team in 2010, scored 176.5 points to win its second conference team title in the last four seasons.

Cirigliano, who placed second at 140 pounds in 2010, capped a 3-0 day with a 5-1 decision over Dustin Badger of Unadilla Valley. Cirigliano followed a pin of Delhi's Justin Mattice in 1:08 with a 9-1 major decision over Derek Northrop of Sidney in the semifinals.

Viviano and 2011 Daily Star Football Player of the Year Holden stopped their respective championship opponents with first-period pins. Viviano's title match against Delhi's Brian Ingram lasted 1:33, two seconds shorter than Holden's final against Austin Dean of Sidney.

Viviano followed a quarterfinal bye with a 53-second semifinal pin of Walton's Eddie Castillo. Holden, who also had a quarterfinal bye, pinned Bradey Bean of Unatego 1:26 into their semifinal.

Kevin Thayer (138) and Codie Nichols (145) rounded out the local champions, helping third-place Unatego to 118 points.

Thayer had a bye for the quarterfinals, earned a 12-3 major decision over Walton's Ray James in the semis, and beat B-G/A's Jesse Griswold, 6-2, in the final.

Nichols opened with a technical fall over Delhi's Noah DeDominicis in 4:12, then won his semifinal against Deposit's Tim Penso with an 8-0 major decision.

The MAC runner-up at 130 pounds last season and at 125 in 2010, Nichols won the 145-pound crown with a 5-3 decision over Corey Burnett of B-G/A.

Unatego also got a second-place finish from Leland Slawson, who dropped a 5-0 decision to Greene's Dan Dickman in the 152-pound title bout.

Teammates Dylan Wood and Mike Beers had runner-up finishes for Walton, which placed fourth with 98 points.

Wood fell, 12-1, to Oxford's Joe Nelson in the 99-pound final. Beers lost via technical fall to Greene's Keegan Cerwinski in the 182-pound championship, which lasted 4:24.

Delhi (seventh, 63.5 points) had the most third-place finishes among area teams with three as Trey Mostert (126), Collin Ellis (152) and Cody Lafever (170) won their respective consolation finals.

Marszal and Lucas DeJoy (132) finished third for Unatego, as did Walton's Logan Robinson (106) and Joe Hahn (285), and B-G/A's Brett Hubbard (113) and Shane Curtin (220). Alex Morrow (195) also won a consolation final, helping sixth-place Sidney to 83 points.

Badger's runner-up finish at 132 marked the top performance for last-place Unadilla Valley, which had 32 points. Badger also finished second in 2010, when he was pinned by B-G/A's Wayne Cirigliano in the 119-pound final.

Dickman and Cerwinski were two of six champions for Greene, who also received titles from Brendan Wheeler (106), Ryan Castle (113), Joel Roselle (170) and Kyle Stanton (220).

The Section Four Class Championships are scheduled for this Saturday. Odessa-Montour will host the Section Four Class D finals. Sites have not been announced for classes B and C.

The Broome County Arena in Binghamton will host the overall Section Four Championships, which run Feb. 10-11.
