Franklin girls win T-V West

Ronald Reagan was in his first term, Doug Flutie won the Heisman Trophy and Carl Lewis won four Olympic gold medals in Los Angeles.

The year was 1984 and, before Friday, that was also the last time Franklin's girls won a Tri-Valley League basketball division championship. The Purple Devils ended that skid by clinching the West Division title with a 59-27 victory over visiting Edmeston.

"There's excitement," Franklin coach Mike Dutcher said. "Every team takes pride in their school, but this is the first time since (1984) that Franklin's girls have to a crossover game. We're very happy about that."

The Purple Devils (10-1, 9-1), who won the crossover final in 1984 with a 42-41 win over Cherry Valley (it would be another half-dozen or so years before Cherry Valley and Springfield merged), took the drama out of this one early. They led, 19-0, after one quarter and 39-9 at halftime.

"We came out in a halfcourt trap and were able to create just enough chaos that they hard time feeding it into their big girls," Dutcher said.

Jordan Beers and Jessie Terrano scored 21 and 18 points, respectively, for Franklin. Beers contributed eight rebounds, six assists and five steals, and Terrano had seven rebounds, four assists and five steals.

"I think we have one of the best backcourts in the Tri-Valley League," Dutcher said of Beers and Terrano. "There are some other good backcourts, but I wouldn't trade mine for any other."

Franklin also benefited from the return of 5-foot-10 post player Marisa Cawley, a starter last season who suffered an ACL injury to her right knee during softball season. Cawley, playing for the first time this season, scored two points.

"We're going to slowly bring her along," Dutcher said. "We reminded her tonight that she doesn't have to make up three months in one night."

The Tri-Valley League crossover final is Feb. 18 at Oneonta State. Worcester, which handed Franklin its lone loss, leads by Schenevus by a game in the East Division.

Franklin travels to Morris on Wednesday.

Savanna Fistrowicz had 12 points to lead Edmeston.
