Hartwick men ride hot hands to road victory

Jared Suderley finished with game-highs of 21 points and 12 rebounds Friday as the Hartwick College men's basketball team rolled to a 96-59 Empire 8 Conference victory at Utica.

Mike Geisser contributed 18 points for the defending E8 champion Hawks (17-2, 6-2), who received 13 points apiece from Chris Ryder and Anthony Keane.

Matt Baldwin had 16 points and Jeff Ward scored 15 to lead Utica (6-13, 2-6), which trailed, 52-38, at halftime.

The Hawks went 15-for-28 from behind the three-point line. Geisser hit four threes for the Hawks, who received three apiece from Mark Blazek and Keane, two apiece from Ryder and Andres Carpio, and one from Christian Laputka.

The Hawks will visit Ithaca College for an Empire 8 game Saturday.

Freshman Frankie Kelly scored a season-high 17 points, but Oneonta State dropped a SUNY Athletic Conference game on the road.

Julius Bryant scored 14 points and Damien Goodwin II had 11 for Fredonia, which took a 22-20 lead into halftime.

The Red Dragons (2-15, 1-9) visit Buffalo State on Saturday.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

Hartwick 68, Utica 46

Sophomore Kate Purcell hit five three-pointers en route to a game-high 19 points as Hartwick College won a road game in the Empire 8 Conference.

Purcell also had a game-best 11 rebounds, three steals and three assists for the Hawks (15-3, 7-1), who received 10 points apiece from Cooperstown graduate Samantha Fox and Marie Davison.

Hartwick scored the first nine points en route to a 26-5 lead before ending the first half with a 39-14 advantage. Purcell had 16 points and nine rebounds in the first half.

Meghan Fiore scored 13 points and Alyssa Filkins had 12 to pace Utica (7-12, 2-6).

The Hawks will attempt to hit 8-1 in the E8 for the second time in program history on Saturday, when they visit conference leader Ithaca (16-3, 8-0). Hartwick fell, 63-49, to the Bombers earlier this season.

Samantha Szkotak and Madison Slagle scored 18 points apiece to lead visiting Oneonta State to a SUNYAC win.

Sophomore reserves Kelly Mulligan and Alyshia Crawford contributed nine and eight points, respectively, as the Red Dragons' bench outscored Fredonia's, 19-2.

Slagle also had seven rebounds for Oneonta (11-5, 9-1), which took a 32-21 lead into halftime. Becky Hebert's game-high 22 points paced Fredonia (8-8, 4-6), which received 14 from Jenna Austin and 11 from Jaimie Warren.

O-State visits Buffalo State on Saturday. Oneonta beat the Bengals, 65-61, last month.

South Kortright graduate Renee Craft had 24 points and Gilbertsville-Mount Upton graduate Tanya Barnes contributed 10 in SUNY Delhi's Mountain Valley Conference road victory.

Another G-MU graduate, Bri Lambert, hit two free throws with 47 seconds left to give the Broncos a three-point lead.

Taylor DeVantier had 15 points for Delhi (14-7), which hosts Adirondack on Saturday.

SWIMMING

Broncos swept

Kiyomi Shibuya won three events for SUNY Delhi on Thursday in a tri-meet against Old Westbury and host Mount Saint Mary's.

Shibuya touched first in the 200-yard individual medley (2 minutes, 26.85 seconds), the 100 freestyle (58.77) and the 100 breaststroke (1:16.75). The Broncos lost, 60-15, to Old Westbury and fell, 74-15, to Mount Stain Mary's.

The Broncos' men also lost twice _ 72-17 to Old Westbury and 57-30 to Mount Saint Mary's. Jack Garcia had Delhi's victory, touching first in the 100 free in 53.07.

TRACK

O-State teams ranked

The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association has ranked the Oneonta State men's and women's track teams among the top 10 Division III squads in the Atlantic Region, the Red Dragons announced Thursday.

Three top-eight indoor track performances from junior Kacy Boburka helped O-State's women to the No. 5 ranking. Boburka owns the top high jump mark at 5-foot-7, is seventh in the shot put (37-6) and eighth in the triple jump (35-6) this winter. Additionally, Senior Sarah Timmons is No. 1 in the 20-pound weight throw (58-8.75).

Junior Sean Bernstein's top 60-meter time of 6.97 seconds helped Oneonta's men to the No. 9 ranking.

The 2012 NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships are set for March 9-10 in Grinnell, Iowa.
