Oneonta High's boys held a three-goal lead and took twice as many shots as Chenango Forks while playing into the wind during the first half of Wednesday's Southern Tier Athletic Conference game at the Wright National Soccer Campus.
The Yellowjackets followed with a shutout in the second half behind a reserve-laden lineup that amassed more shots and corner kicks than the Blue Devils in a 4-1 victory that marked Oneonta's third straight win by three goals.
"They're getting there," OHS coach Alex Brannan said of his team, which opened the season with back-to-back 3-0 victories over STAC East rivals Seton Catholic Central and Chenango Valley. "Are we doing the right things when the pressure's on? Sometimes we are, but not all the time. Soccer is a game of mistakes, and you've got to make fewer than the other team."
Brannan said he's getting closer to finding the right combination of players that will make the Jackets equally strong on offense and defense, which will be key when OHS plays STAC powers such as Susquehanna Valley, Owego and Maine-Endwell in the near future.
On Wednesday, Brannan moved senior Eric Deemer from midfield to forward, which resulted in a 2-0 lead after 15 minutes. Deemer opened the scoring five minutes in off a pass from Connor Brown and gave OHS a 2-0 cushion 10 minutes later, when he converted a pass from Aaron Foreman.
Matt Arcidiacono set up Connor Shearer for a goal at the 22-minute mark for a 3-0 advantage, but Troy Bowersox scored off a corner kick to cut the deficit to 3-1 with 15 minutes to go in the first half. Arcidiacono capped the scoring eight minutes later with an unassisted goal.
"They're getting there, but truthfully, they don't have to be there until we reach the sectional finals," said Brannan, whose team had a 22-8 advantage in shots, including a 10-5 edge in the first half, and allowed no corner kicks in the second half.
"I like it to be perfect," Brannan continued. "They always say, 'Coach, it's not perfect.' And I say, 'Not now, but it better be at the end.' You don't win state championships unless you're perfect at the end."
Zach Erbe stopped seven shots for the Jackets (3-0, 3-0), who visit Windsor today.
