Slagle lifts O-State women; men complete sweep

Madison Slagle's three-pointer with 6.4 seconds remaining lifted the Oneonta State women's basketball team to a 57-54 SUNY Athletic Conference victory over visiting Geneseo on Friday night.

Slagle came off a screen to get the shot, which snapped a 54-all tie.

Geneseo's Alyssa Polosky's three hit the front of the rim and bounced off to the left at the buzzer.

Geneseo (12-8, 8-5) hit nine three-pointers and had a 42-30 rebounding advantage, but also had 20 turnovers.

Slagle finished with a game-high 15 points for the Red Dragons (13-7, 11-2). She made 3 of 5 from three-point range.

Mary Kate O'Connell scored six of her 10 points in the final five minutes for the Red Dragons. Her final basket put O-State ahead, 54-52.

Polosky, who finished with 13 points, tied it at 54 on a layup with 1:08 remaining.

O-State hosts Brockport at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Nazareth 62, Hartwick 57

Heather Pruchansky finished with a game-high 20 points, but visiting Hartwick lost an Empire 8 Conference game.

Pruchansky, who also had six rebounds, had three three-pointers for the Hawks (6-14, 4-8).

Cassie Dresser contributed nine points for Hartwick

Hartwick used a 12-0 run late in the first half, capped by a basket from South Kortright graduate Jordan Nichols, for a 34-30 lead. Nichols finished with five points.

Nazareth responded with a 10-1 run to close out the half for a 40-35 lead.

The Golden Flyers didn't trail the rest of the game.

Hartwick hosts Ithaca on Friday.

Men's Basketball

O-State 71, Geneseo 57

Reserve Troy Talbot scored 15 points, including 12 in the first half, to lead host Oneonta State in the SUNYAC.

Brian Hooks contributed 13 points for the Red Dragons (15-5, 8-5), who received 10 points from Shane Gillette.

Geneseo (6-14, 5-8) closed to 50-46 with about seven minutes remaining, but couldn't get any closer.

The score was tied at 12 midway through the first half, but the Red Dragons closed on a 21-10 run to lead, 33-22, at halftime.

O-State hosts Brockport at 4 p.m. Saturday.

Kyle Phillips' college-best 28 points wasn't enough for Hartwick in an Empire 8 loss on the road.

Phillips, a senior, went 13-for-18 from the floor. He also had five rebounds for the Hawks (8-12, 5-7).

Chris Ryder scored 14 points for Hartwick and Mark Blazek had 12.

Hartwick pulled to 52-46 with about 12 minutes remaining, but the Golden Eagles (14-7, 9-3) went on a 14-4 run to make it 66-50 with 7:52 left. Nazareth kept the lead in double-digits the rest of the game.

Hartwick hosts Ithaca on Friday.
