Jackets' win sets up huge game Tuesday

STAFF REPORT

Senior center Val Ridgway had 20 points and 15 rebounds to lead host Oneonta High to a 48-37 Southern Tier Athletic Conference girls basketball victory over Johnson City on Friday.

The Yellowjackets (14-1) improved to 11-1 in STAC and can clinch a tie for their third straight Central Division title by beating rival Maine-Endwell at home Tuesday.

The Spartans are unbeaten in league play, including a 45-33 home win over OHS on Dec. 23.

"We turned the ball over too many times," OHS coach Bob Zeh said of the first game against the Spartans. "Against them, that's instant offense. We probably gave them 10-12 points off our turnovers and we can't do that."

Zeh, whose team won its first STAC title last season with a 42-34 win over Seton Catholic Central, also said execution against M-E's athletic man-to-man will be key.

"They play great man-to-man defense, but hopefully we'll have a good game," said Zeh, whose team went 25-1 a season ago, losing in the Class B state final, 39-35, to Nanuet.

If OHS beats M-E, the teams will play a tiebreaker to decide the Central title.

On Friday, JC trailed, 22-19, at halftime. The teams then combined for eight third-quarter points as the Yellowjackets extended their lead to 28-21.

Ridgway and Sienna Wisse scored eight points apiece in the fourth quarter as OHS broke it open. Wisse finished with 10 points, Erin Wolstenholme had eight and Lesley Harlem scored six.

Harlem, a senior guard who hit two three-pointers, had a contact lens knocked out and had to sit for about a quarter while her mother drove home to get another set of lenses.
