DELHI _ Lightning struck twice for Brad Anderson on Sunday ... and 10 times overall.
Following a weather-related delay that lasted more than an hour, Delhi resident Anderson secured his second straight title at the Delaware County Amateur Golf Championship by completing a run of nine straight pars. The result was an even-par 72 in the last of three rounds at the Delhi College Golf Course, where Anderson finished at 217 for a two-stroke victory over Neil Krick.
"I was happy with my three days," said Anderson, 38, who extended his Delaware County Amateur record to 10 championships overall. "I was patient. On that course in a big tournament, you just have to play for pars. I finished the last nine holes with nine pars and that just did it for me."
The turning point in the 47th annual event came when lightning flashed as the last group prepared to putt on the 15th green. The course quickly emptied as the players waited out a thunderstorm that lasted about an hour and 15 minutes.
Krick, who shot a 34 on the front nine for a one-stroke lead over Anderson at the turn, struggled when play resumed.
"I really came out cold after the delay," said Krick, who blocked a shot on 16 and sent another into the trees on 18. "I was not a fan of Mother Nature at that point."
Krick closed with a 3-over-par 39 on the back nine for a three-day total of 219.
"Neil played great," Anderson said of Krick, who followed an opening-day 75 with a 71 that marked Saturday's low round to pull one stroke behind Anderson entering Sunday. "He's the best putter I've ever seen. He was just so consistent over the three days and his putter kept him in it."
Krick said he needed more than just his putter to overthrow Anderson, though.
"He is just such a competitor," Krick said of Anderson, who shot 72-73-72 for his winning total. "He's so fundamentally sound. He epitomizes a solid golfer who just doesn't make mistakes."
Anderson attributed his 36-36 finish Sunday to keeping his game on an even keel.
"I just have to stay patient and stay more conservative in the tournament than in my typical weekend game," said Anderson, a 15-year tournament-committee member who competed in the D.C. Amateur for the 23rd time.
Len Govern also shot even-par Sunday en route to a third-place finish at 221 strokes, which earned him the title of Senior Champion. He followed an opening-day 73 with a 76 on Saturday.
Matt Moyse (76-73-73) and Mike Batey (73-77-72) rounded out the top five in the championship flight, which started with 24 golfers. Eighteen players shot 162 or better through Saturday to make the cut for Sunday's final round.
Jeremy Eighmey overcame a three-stroke deficit Sunday to force a playoff with Paul Roach in the A Flight. Eighmey shot 80 on Sunday to tie Roach with a three-day total of 240, then won the A Flight on the first playoff hole.
Brandon Simonds had a 79 in the last round to win the B Flight at 240, two strokes ahead of Mike Wagner Sr.
Jared Jones cruised to the C Flight crown with a 241 as he beat JP Jones and Tom Aitken by seven strokes.
Chris Johnson shot a 265 to finish four strokes better than Richard Price and Kevin Rossley in the D Flight.
The E Flight also went to a playoff as John Wyberanec and Wayne Lawrence tied at 282 after three rounds. Wyberanec won the E Flight on the first playoff hole.
