Champen leads Stallions to franchise's first road win

Oneonta High graduate Noble Champen rushed for one touchdown and passed for another Saturday, leading the Oneonta City Stallions to a 17-8 Northeastern Football Alliance victory at Cortland.

Champen set up the first road victory in the Stallions' four-year history with a 1-yard TD run that made it 6-2 in the second quarter.

Jimmy Kazalski followed with the extra point, then had another after Champen hit Jason Carnel with a 10-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter.

The Bulldogs (0-5) answered with a 30-yard TD pass that made it 14-8 with 30 seconds left in the opening half. Cortland failed to convert the ensuing two-point run attempt.

Kazalski capped the scoring with a 35-yard field goal in the third quarter.

"They never really sniffed the goal line at all in the second half," Stallions co-owner Tom Terry said. "It was an ugly game, quite frankly, but you have to learn how to win ugly games on the road."

Champen completed 5 of 10 passes for 80 yards, with 40 coming on three completions to Zach Blocker. Carnel scored on his only catch for Oneonta City (3-3), which received 65 rushing yards on 12 carries by Blocker.

Defensive end Kevin Gregory finished with three sacks and five tackles, and middle linebacker Jeremy Polemus had one sack and six tackles.

The Stallions remained in fourth place in the six-team East Division of the NFA, one game behind the Utica Yard Dawgs (4-2). Defending league champion Troy (5-0) and Glove Cities (5-1) occupy the top two spots.

Terry said the top three teams in the East Division advance to the NFA playoffs. The second- and third-place teams will play for a spot in the East Division final opposite the first-place team, which will have a first-round bye. The East Division playoff champion will advance to the overall NFA title game against the West Division playoff winner.

Oneonta City hosts Glove Cities at 6:30 p.m. this Saturday at Hartwick College's Wright Stadium.

"This probably will be the biggest game in Stallions history, no question," said Terry, whose team fell, 14-7, at Glove Cities on June 9.

The Stallions also host Troy on July 28.
