Mike Calkins threw his first Legion no-hitter as Oneonta Post 259 avenged an earlier loss to visiting Hancock with a 10-0 District Six Division II baseball victory Wednesday.
The game was shortened to five innings because of the 10-run rule.
Calkins struck out nine and walked none. He missed a perfect game when a Hancock batter reached via an error in the fourth inning.
"The last three outings, he's just had terrific command of his offspeed pitch," Oneonta coach Mike Jester said of Calkins, who threw a no-hitter with 17 strikeouts in Oneonta High's 3-1 victory over Horseheads in a Southern Tier Athletic Conference semifinal in May. "That's made him real dangerous out there."
Calkins (4-1) will play for Division II University of Tampa next season.
Hancock, which defeated the Green Wave, 7-5, on June 19, allowed six runs in the first inning. Losing pitcher Tyler Phillips walked six batters. Oneonta's lone hit in the inning with a two-run single by David Wright that made it 6-0.
Sean Getman's two-run double in the third inning made it 8-0 and Calkins hit an RBI triple in the fifth inning, when Dan Hodne ended the game with an RBI single.
"We talked a little before the game," Jester said of Oneonta's earlier loss to Hancock. "They remembered how we lost to them earlier in the year. We knew we had to be ready. They know how to play baseball, but we took care of business."
Jester added it was good to see his team bounce back from a 13-2 loss to Sidney on Monday.
Getman, Hodne and Matt Horne had two hits apiece for Oneonta (18-9, 7-2), which is off today before hosting its Green Wave Wood Bat Classic Friday through Sunday.
Oneonta opens play in the eight-team tournament at 8 p.m. Friday against the Schenectady County Indians at Damaschke Field. Montreal, Bradford County, Sidney, Pawucket, Brockville and Corning Gray are also in the field.
