Harpersfield track not for racing
The Eastern Motor Racing Association has confirmed that it will be holding racing events at the NY Safety track in Harpersfield.
The newly-built track has made for an interesting 18 months. In June 2011, the agent for the company told the planning board the Motorcycle Safety Foundation was interested in purchasing his Harpersfield property. The Motorcycle Safety Foundation has since confirmed it has no connection to the project whatsoever.
The purchasers (current owners) of the track submitted a site-plan application to build a safety track “to train riders,” according to “Motorcycle Safety Foundation curriculum.” The track would supply 250cc motorcycles.
Despite the fact the track design resembled a race course, IDA Executive Director Glenn Nealis, Harpersfield Supervisor Jim Eisel, Harpersfield Planning Board Chairman Dean Darling and Davenport Supervisor Dennis Valente all assured concerned residents there would be no cars on the track, and certainly no racing.
In August 2012, track manager Greg Lubinitsky stood before a gathering of about 40 residents at a town board meeting and stated, unequivocally, “There will be NO racing.”
Astoundingly, after all this talk (documented on public records and available at Harpersfield Town Hall or www.NewYorkSafetyTrack.com) the owners of the track have contracted with the Eastern Motor Racing Association to hold four days of sanctioned CAR RACING events in Harpersfield in 2013!
Thankfully, the town board has shown no wavering in its commitment to enforce the site plan. Eisel forcefully stated at a Nov. 13 town board meeting: “The Town will enforce the site plan ... (the track is) not for racing cars or motorcycles.”
Affected Delaware County residents are putting their faith in the strong and steady abilities of the town board and the new code officer to ensure the integrity of the process.
