Registration continues today
The City of Oneonta will continue registration for its free summer youth sports programs today at the Asa C. Allison Municipal Building on the corner of Academy and Fairview streets.
The last day of registration for city residents runs from 5-8 p.m. today. Open registration will follow from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday through Friday and from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday. Registration forms must be completed by parents or legal guardians.
The following programs will be offered this summer:
Kiwanis Softball (ages 5-8): Mondays and Wednesdays at Neahwa Park's Ted Christman Field from June 25-Aug. 6.
Rotary Tee-Ball (5-7): Tuesdays and Thursdays at Christman Field from June 26-Aug. 2.
Kiwanis Baseball (8-12): Mondays and Wednesdays at Christman Field from June 25-Aug. 6.
Swimming Lessons (6 months and up): Weekday mornings at Wilber Park's Briggs Pool from June 25-July 27.
Tennis Lessons (5-and-older): Weekday mornings at Wilber Park's Waddington Tennis Courts from June 25-Aug. 3.
Drop-In Playground (grades K-6): Weekdays from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at Neahwa Park's Laskaris Skateroom from June 25-Aug. 10.
Children must be in the age ranges above as of June 21, 2012. The drop-in playground is for youths in grades K-6 during the 2011-12 academic year.
OHS awards night Wednesday
Oneonta High will host its 66th annual Varsity 'O' Athletic Awards Evening at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the high school cafeteria. All varsity teams will be recognized during the event, which is open to all OHS athletes and their families.
Male and Female Athletes of the Year will be announced, along with winners of the Anthony C. Drago, Herb Burchell, Carl J. Delberta (male and female), E.C. Dutch Damaschke, Service and Athletics, and Cathy Lynch Patron to Athletics awards. A dessert buffet will follow.
Women's gun course Saturday
The Oneonta Sportsmen's Club will host Women on Target, an introduction to the handgun shooting sport, from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday at 251 Rod and Gun Club Road.
The event will feature roughly four hours of classroom lecture followed by two-to-three hours shooting various handguns on the range.
The class will cover basic firearms safety, ammunition, cleaning, storage and basic shooting techniques.

Golf tournament Saturday
The Cullman Child Development Center in Sidney will host the 13th annual Cullman Golf Challenge at 8 a.m. Saturday at the Afton Golf Club.
The captain-and-crew event will begin with a shotgun start. Snacks will be available throughout the tournament, which ends with a buffet lunch for all participants. The event also includes raffles, prizes and a hole-in-one tournament with a $5,000 prize. All proceeds benefit the Cullman Child Development Center. Self-defense seminar Saturday
The Mountain Martial Arts Academy in Stamford will hold a Woman's Self Defense Seminar on Saturday.
The first hour is free to all participants and there is no obligation to attend the remainder of the seminar.
The first hour will cover basic mental aspects of self-defense, the establishment of boundaries and basic striking skills. The remainder of the course will focus on defending yourself with empty hands, from strikes, holds, ground fighting and key-baton applications.

Golf tourney July 14 at Stamford
The Sacred Heart/St. Annas Council 1322 of Stamford will host the 10th annual Father Whalen Golf Tournament at 10 a.m. July 14 at the Stamford Golf Club.
The scramble tournament will begin with a shotgun start and feature trophies for the winners, door prizes for all a continental breakfast, lunch, a one-hour open bar and dinner.
Cost is $75 per player and includes a greens fees, cart, a fun bag and golf balls.

Softball school starts June 25
The 6th Ward All County Softball School will run from 9 a.m.-noon June 25-28 at Field 4 in Neahwa Park.
The school is for players ages 9-17 and teaches fundamentals of pitching, hitting, fielding and baserunning.

CSC basketball starts June 18
The Clark Sports Center is accepting registrations for its Girls and Boys Summer Basketball League.
Players who will be in grades 7-12 next season may participate. Boys will play Mondays and girls will play Wednesdays.

Schedule set for HOF Classic Weekend
The National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown will host a series of events during the fourth annual Hall of Fame Classic Weekend.
The June 16 exhibition game at Doubleday Field will feature Hall of Famers Bert Blyleven, Carlton Fisk, Eddie Murray, Phil Niekro, Tony Pérez and Ozzie Smith, as well as several other former major leaguers. The guest list for the latter includes Jesse Barfield, Brian Boehringer, Will Cunnane, Ben Davis, John Doherty, Brian Fisher, Todd Haney, Jim Hannan, Phil Huffman, Howard Johnson, Jack Lazorko, Rob Mackowiak, Russ Ortiz, Dennis Rasmussen, Desi Relaford, Shane Reynolds, Jon Warden, Rick

The Headwaters Soccer Club will host two scramble golf tournaments to benefit its summer camp program.
The 19th annual Hank Hotaling Charity Golf Tournament starts at 2 p.m. June 16 at the Stamford Golf Club.
The fourth annual Ouleout Creek Charity Golf Tournament begins at 1 p.m. Aug. 11 in Franklin.
Cost is $50 per person and includes greens fees, cart and buffet. Players may register as teams or individuals.

Tri-Valley Colts golf tourney June 16
Colonial Ridge Golf in Laurens will host the Tri-Valley Colts Father's Day Parent-Child Captain-and-Mate at 8 a.m. June 16.
Cost is $50 per 14-and-under team and $60 per 15-and-over team. Prize money, skins, pin shots and a barbecue lunch are included. Greens fees and carts cost extra, but youths ages 12-and-under will play and ride for free.
Eligible pairings are parent/child, grandparent/grandchild; parent in-law/child in-law; and aunt or uncle/nephew or niece.

Unadilla MX events continue in June
The 2012 schedule for Unadilla MX in New Berlin includes the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship Weekend, which will run Aug. 17-19 at the Unadilla Valley Sports Complex.
A June 17 District 3 MX event will be followed by the ATV MX National Weekend, which is set for July 13-15.
The season will close with the Sept. 15-16 Grand National Cross Country.

Summer lacrosse begins June 18
Lacrosse Oneonta will begin its 2012 season June 18.
The recreational summer lacrosse league will run from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays through Aug. 15 at Sixth Ward Booster Club Park (across from the Boys and Girls Club). Instructional league play begins at 5:30 p.m., followed by adult competitive play from 6:30-8:30 p.m.
Sign-ups are scheduled for 6-8 p.m. June 11 and 13. Players must have a USLacrosse membership, which costs $25-50 and is available online at www.uslacrosse.org.
Cost to participate in Lacrosse Oneonta is an additional $45 and includes a reversible jersey.
Each player also must have a stick, a helmet, shoulder pads, arm guards, gloves and a mouthpiece.

The Latte Lounge Oneonta Adult Summer Soccer League is accepting teams and players for the 2012 season.

Summer soccer series starts June 25
The Headwaters Soccer Club is accepting registrations for its summer camps, which will run for the 23rd year this summer.
Seven camps will be held for boys and girls ages 7-17. Team camps are also available.
Cost to attend is $60 per week, which includes a T-shirt and a water bottle for each participant. Area coaches and players will conduct the camps, which run from 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
The Empire Toyota-Wendy's Camp starts the series, from June 25-29 at Otego American Legion Post 1555.

Summer swim program opens June 25
SUNY Delhi's summer swim program for children and adults begins June 25.
Community lessons will run from 9 a.m.-noon in the Kunsela Hall pool. Classes include American Red Cross Levels I-VI, Basic Water Rescue, infant/toddler/preschoolers program and a Level VI diving class. Swim team practice also is available.
Village/town residents of Delhi, Bovina and Meredith should contact their respective village clerk to register for free enrollment. Proof of residency is required.
Town of Hamden residents should contact their town or village clerk to register for one three-week session, with a cost of $10 per child payable to Hamden Town Clerk. Proof of residency is required.
Those who are not residents of Bovina, Delhi, Hamden or Meredith may participate at a cost of $45 per person for each session.

National Baseball Hall of Fame catcher Johnny Bench will be the featured guest for The Business Council of New York State's fifth annual Business Council Member Golf Classic, which is scheduled for July 17 in Cooperstown.

Soccer club to host camp this summer
The Cooperstown Soccer Club and Challenger Sports will host a British Soccer camp from July 30-Aug. 3 at the Elementary School Fields in Cooperstown.
The camp will run Monday through Friday. Youths will be coached by a member of Challenger's British coaching staff and receive a camp T-shirt, a soccer ball, a soccer poster, an individual skills performance evaluation and free access to an educational soccer website. The Oneonta Country Club will host the 20th annual Hughson-Benson Associates/Mang Insurance Group Firemen's Invitational Golf Tournament on Aug. 11.

Hall to host two races Aug. 11
National Baseball Hall of Fame outfielder Lou Brock will host the Cooperstown shrine's BASE Race on Aug. 11.
The Hall and Clark Sports Center will sponsor a 5-kilometer family fun run and a 10K competitive run Aug. 11. The races will serve as a foundation for the national launch weekend of the Hall's BASE initiative, which will introduce the concepts of healthy lifestyle choices to a worldwide audience and educate students about the dangers of performance-enhancing substances. Proceeds from the fundraiser will be used to expand the outreach of the BASE program.
Both BASE races will start and end at the Clark Sports Center. Registration is $25 for adults and $50 for families until July 15.
