Post 259 wins first at Classic

Calkins strikes out 14 in four-hitter

Mike Calkins had more hits than he allowed Thursday.

Calkins finished with two singles, two doubles and a triple for Oneonta Post 259, which went 1-1 during the second day of round-robin play in the Broome County Hall of Fame Classic.

The Green Wave followed an 11-4 loss to Shrub Oak on Thursday with a 5-3 victory over Severna Park, Md.

Recent Oneonta High graduate Calkins threw a four-hitter in the latter, striking out 14 and walking three at Union-Endicott to lead Post 259 to its first triumph in the five-day Classic.

"We're still hanging on by a thread," said Oneonta coach Mike Jester, whose team opened the Classic on Wednesday with an 11-0 loss to Hamilton, N.J. "We have to win the next two to advance to the semifinals."

Oneonta (15-7) plays Utica Adrean at 9 a.m. today at Conlon Field in Binghamton. The Green Wave then meet Binghamton Post 1645 at Conlon Field at 6 p.m. Saturday in the last round-robin game of the Classic.

The top two teams in each of the two divisions will advance to the semifinal round, which is slated for 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Sunday at Conlon Field. The championship game will follow at 4 p.m. Sunday at the same site.

Calkins helped himself Thursday with an RBI triple to center field that drove in Ben Moxley for a 3-1 lead in the top of the fifth inning. Zach Pidgeon followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 4-1, and Oneonta scored another run in the seventh.

Severna Park scored twice in the seventh against Division II University of Tampa-bound Calkins (3-1), who gave up one earned run.

Moxley and Mark Giallanzo each had two hits and an RBI for the Green Wave, who blew a 2-0 lead in Thursday's first game at Conlon Field.

Shrub Oak scored four runs in the third and four more in the fourth against Giallanzo (3-2) for an 8-2 lead. After scoring another run in the fifth against reliever Sean Getman, Shrub Oak allowed a two-run homer to lefty Pidgeon in the bottom frame. His shot to right field made it 9-4.

Calkins contributed a pair of doubles and a run for Oneonta, which received two singles from David Wright.
