Local boy sets state, American records in powerlifting

Sidney resident Jordan Byrnes, 11, set an American record and a state record during the American Challenge Powerlifting Meet, which ran June 16 in Sidney.

Competing in the 132-pound division for lifters ages 10-11, Jordan had a bench press of 105 pounds to break the U.S. record by 10 pounds. He also had a state-record deadlift of 169 pounds.

Jordan, who weighed in at 125 pounds, placed first in his class.

In the 165-pound weight class, Bainbridge 16-year-old Mike Nordberg broke the bench-press state record for lifters ages 16-17 at 241 pounds. Nordberg, who broke the record by 21 pounds, also had a 302-pound squat and a 397-pound deadlift to win his class.

Masonville's Tom Harris had first-place efforts of 281 pounds in the bench and 441 in the deadlift in the 181-pound class for ages 45-49. Harris is the state-record holder in the bench press, at 300 pounds.

A total of 60 lifters hailing from New York, New Jersey, Ohio and Pennsylvania competed in the drug-tested competition.

The next competition will take place at the Otsego County Fair in Morris.
