Moxley, Hughes are state's best in Class B

Seven of area's 12 all-state selections played for Oneonta High's first state champions

Ben Moxley didn't see this coming.

He wasn't really looking for it, though.

"Wow! That wasn't even a goal," said Oneonta High senior pitcher Moxley, the 2012 New York State Sports Writers Association's Class B Player of the Year. "That's way beyond. I didn't really think any of us would get it, just because we were such a good team. That makes it hard to single out one player."

The NYSSWA didn't really ignore the rest of Oneonta's Class B state championship team, which went 24-2 under 28th-year head coach Joe Hughes in earning the school's first state title in baseball.

In addition to naming Hughes the state's Class B Coach of the Year, six of Moxley's teammates received all-state accolades.

Senior first baseman Sean Getman joined Moxley on the First Team, followed by senior catcher Zach Pidgeon, senior left fielder David Wright and junior center fielder Chris Pindar on the Second Team.

Second baseman Conor Youngs and right fielder Mark Giallanzo _ seniors who doubled as key pitchers _ round out the Yellowjackets' all-staters on the third and seventh teams, respectively. Seven 10-player teams were selected in Class B.

"It could have gone to any one of those guys," Moxley said of his Player of the Year award, which followed an 8-0 season that included a walk-free four-hitter in a 2-0 state-championship victory over Briarcliff on June 9 at Conlon Field in Binghamton.

The Southern Tier Athletic Conference selected Moxley, Getman, Pidgeon, Wright and Youngs to its East/Central all-conference team. Giallanzo and Pindar made the STAC's All-East Division squad, along with senior third baseman Ben Payton.

Senior left-handed pitcher Mike Calkins was snubbed for the second time this season as neither the NYSSWA nor the STAC found a spot for the future Division II ballplayer.

Although Calkins went 3-2, his losses came against Class AA opponents Union-Endicott (2-1) and Niskayuna (4-1). He also struck out 17 in a no-hitter against Class AA Horseheads during a 3-1 STAC semifinal win and earned the pitching victory in Oneonta's 8-4 state-semifinal defeat of Wayland-Cohocton. Those performances set up Moxley to earn pitching victories in the STAC and state championship games.

Calkins, who will play D-II ball at the University of Tampa next season, also contributed big hits as the Jackets designated hitter. His three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh tied the score in the Section Four Class B final against then-defending Class B state champion Chenango Valley, which lost, 11-10, on Pindar's bases-loaded single later in the inning. Calkins also homered in a 3-for-3 effort during the state final.

"I think Mike is certainly deserving of any and all of those teams, but I respect the process," said Hughes, who added that his first state Coach of the Year award wasn't on Oneonta's list of goals this season. "Seven (all-staters) is pretty impressive, though.

"There wasn't a harder working group of athletes, so all of them are deserving of that kind of recognition," Hughes continued. "I hope we'll have another team in the future that can enjoy this type of experience and success. I wish every athlete and coach could experience this."

The NYSSWA also recognized two Unatego players in Class C and three local Class D boys on its all-state teams.

Midstate Athletic Conference MVP Quinn Barnhart and Unatego teammate Dan Shelton made the third and fourth teams, respectively, in Class C. Junior pitcher/infielder Barnhart batted .618 and threw a no-hitter for the Spartans (16-5), who got 50 strikeouts in 31 innings and a 2.20 ERA from senior pitcher/infielder/outfielder Shelton.

Area selections in Class D were Richfield Springs senior pitcher/second baseman Zach Boss (Second Team), Cherry Valley-Springfield pitcher/first baseman Brett Adams (Third Team), and CV-S pitcher/infielder Andrew Bosc (Fourth Team).

Adams and Bosc helped the Patriots (13-5) to their third straight Tri-Valley League crown this past season.

Boss led Richfield Springs (14-4) to an appearance in the Section Four Class D final, where the Indians fell, 7-0, to Hancock.
