Replacing two-time Daily Star and Class D state Player of the Year Kori Hamm won't be an easy chore for Edmeston's girls soccer team.
It sure seemed that way for 79 minutes and 50 seconds of their season opener Friday as the Panthers were stuck in a scoreless tie with Laurens in a first-round game of the Edmeston Tournament that doubled as a Tri-Valley League meeting.
Then with 10 seconds left, Kendra Bressett volleyed in a crossing pass from Emily Holdorf to give Edmeston a 1-0 victory in the season opener for both teams.
"It was textbook," Panthers coach Melanie Mumbulo said of Holdorf's pass. "A service over the top and to the person in the back corner."
Holdorf's lofted pass from the left side split Laurens' sweeper and back defender, and Bressett finished from 6 yards.
Hamm, a five-year varsity player, scored a school-record 109 goals. She also led the Panthers to a share of the Class D state title with S.S. Seward in 2008.
"Kori and (goalie) Susanna (Johnson) are our biggest ones," Mumbulo said of the losses to graduation off a 13-5-1 team from a year ago that lost, 1-0, to Davenport in a Section Four Class D semifinal.
Johnson earned two Daily Star All-Star First Team selections as a goalie for Edmeston.
"Sometimes we looked OK and other times we looked like we need a lot of work," Mumbulo said.
Edmeston will face Unadilla Valley in the championship game at noon Saturday. Laurens will oppose Downsville in a consolation game at 10 a.m.

The second of Amanda Tumilowicz's two goals came with 22 minutes left and gave Unadilla Valley a 3-1 lead in its first-round victory of the Edmeston Tournament.
The game marked the season opener for both teams.
Emily Hutchinson also scored for the Storm, who received an assist from Katelynn Fagan.
Chelsea Taylor scored both of Downsville's goals, the latter coming with five minutes left that made it a one-goal game. Taylor had one more good opportunity in the final minutes, but Fagan knocked the ball away before she could take a shot.

Corrinne Reigel and Shania Vandermark scored two goals apiece to lead Bainbridge-Guilford to victory over the host school in the Mang Tournament.
Reigel scored both of B-G's first-half goals as the Bobcats took a 2-0 lead in the season opener for both teams. Reigel scored on a 12-yard shot with 24 1/2 minutes left in the first half and again on a 6-yard shot three minutes before halftime.
Gia Cuoma also scored for B-G, which plays Chenango Valley at 5 p.m. Saturday in the final.
Bethany Karl scored for Sidney, which opposes Windsor in the consolation at 3 p.m. Saturday.
CV defeated Windsor, 4-0, in the other first-round game.

Defending Tri-Valley League champion and 2009 Section Four Class D finalist Cherry Valley-Springfield cruised to a season-opening win in the first round of the Edmeston Tournament.
Nine players figured into the scoring for the Patriots, who received a goal from Justin Monahan 1:15 into play.
"I thought they worked well together and supported each other on both sides of the ball," CV-S coach Terri Adams said. "It's a very unselfish team. That's why you see all the different names (in the box score)."
CV-S has 15 players back from last season, including seven starters. The Patriots won their first 18 games last season before falling, 2-1, to Margaretville in the sectional final. Four of their wins came against Morris, including a 3-0 victory in the Tri-Valley League final and a 1-0 win in a sectional semifinal.
Monahan's goal came after CV-S took two shots in the box that were blocked. The latter squirted to the right side, where Monahan finished from close range.
The first of Scott Stiles' two goals made it 2-0. Seth Drugatz sent a long crossing pass that Andrew Spencer headed over goalie Kerry Smith. Stiles then scored into an open net.
Jake Palumbo, Kyle Jaquay, Jake Hoag and Stiles contributed second-half goals for CV-S, which received three saves from Ben VanAlstine.
The Patriots play the host school in the title game at 4:30 p.m. Saturday.
Smith had 16 saves for Morris, which plays Davenport in the consolation game at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

It took one game for Edmeston to equal its victory total from a season ago as the Panthers received two goals from Blake Vibbard in a first-round victory in the Edmeston Tournament that served as the season opener for both teams.
The Panthers scored 14 goals in 2009, when they went 1-14. They got their first goal of the 2010 season six minutes into play as Chris Simmons scored on a restart from the left corner of the box to the upper far post. Vibbard made it 2-0 with 14:40 left in the first half after receiving a throughball from Tanner Ray.
Clayton Hawes set up Vibbard's final goal eight minutes into the second half to make it 3-0.
"I was pleasantly surprised," Edmeston coach Ed Wheeldon said of his team's offensive output.
James Anderson scored for Davenport.
On playing CV-S on Saturday in the tournament final, Wheeldon said: "They're still the real deal. I would have to consider them the favorite to win the Tri-Valley League with what they have returning. But that's why they play the games. Soccer is a funny game and anything can happen."

Brooks Harmon scored twice and Zach Falciani made 10 saves to lead Bainbridge-Guilford to a first-round victory over host Sidney in the Mang Tournament.
In the opening match for both teams, Sidney struck first when goalie Joe Petroski hit a long punt beyond B-G's defense that set up Hunter Sowersby for a breakaway goal nine minutes into play.
Brandon Gavin tied it for the Bobcats five minutes later, hitting a low shot under Petroski. Three minutes after that, Jordan Smith's pass to the right side set up Harmon for a for a 10-yard shot that went inside the near post.
Harmon capped the scoring on a rebound off a direct kick by Steve Patten 15 minutes into the second half.
The Bobcats will play Chenango Valley in the final at 7 p.m. Saturday. CV defeated Windsor, 3-2, in the other first-round game.
Sidney and Windsor play at 3 p.m. Saturday in the consolation.
