Baseball Hall to host blood drive
The National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown will host a blood drive from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday in the museum's Education Gallery.
Donors will receive free admission Saturday. Those who have not donated within 56 days of Saturday are eligible to participate.

Gilbertsville youth shoot set for Saturday
The Gilbertsville Rod & Gun Club on Gun Club Road in Gilbertsville will host its annual Youth Shoot Day from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday.
Events include trapshooting, rifle range, bow range and more. The day also will feature safety demos for all youths and guidance for new shooters.
Youths ages 5-18 may participate at no cost. Participants should bring their own guns and bows as loaners are limited. Food is available at the clubhouse.
The club also will hold its monthly trapshoot on Sunday.

Golf tourney to run this weekend
The fifth annual French Woods Golf and Country Club 2-Man Scramble Invitational is set for Saturday and Sunday at the Hancock course.
Cost is $200 per team and includes two-day cart rental, lunch Saturday, breakfast Sunday, dinner after Sunday's round, prizes and a complimentary round.
Teams will tee off at 9 a.m. Saturday in two-man best ball and at 9 a.m. Sunday in captain-and-mate. Scores will be combined to determine winners.

Golf tournament set for Sunday
The Ouleout Creek Golf Course in North Franklin will host the ninth annual Heart of Gold tournament at 8 a.m. Sunday.
Cost to enter the captain-and-crew tournament is $50 and includes cart and lunch. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three teams.
The event also features a $5,000 prize for a hole-in-one.

Football boosters' breakfast Sunday
The Oneonta Football Booster Club will hold its annual Pancake Breakfast from 8-11:30 a.m. Sunday at the Sixth Ward Athletic Club.
The menu features all-you-can-eat pancakes and sausage, as well as beverages. Oneonta football players and cheerleaders will serve food.
Cost is $5 for adults and $3 for children ages 12 and younger. Tickets may be purchased from OHS football players and cheerleaders or at the door.

OHS modified practices start Wednesday
Oneonta High's modified fall sports teams will begin practicing Wednesday.
Girls soccer will start at 8 a.m., followed by football and cross country at 9 a.m.; volleyball at 10 a.m.; girls swimming at 11 a.m.; and boys soccer at 5 p.m.

 Unatego's first modified football practice will run from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Monday at the high school. At the same time, modified boys and girls soccer practices will run at Otego Elementary.
 Morris also will begin modified soccer practices Wednesday. All paperwork must be submitted before the first practice.
 Milford's modified boys and girls soccer practices begin at 3:15 p.m. Sept. 7. Athletes should wear appropriate soccer attire and bring completed sports contracts and proof of a current physical.
Colonial to host tourney Wednesday
Colonial Ridge Golf in Laurens will host the Otsego County and Delaware County Retired Teachers Associations' NOT Going Back-to-School golf tournament at 8 a.m. Wednesday.
All retired educators and guests are invited to play in the captain-and-crew event, which features 18 holes, a golf cart and lunch. Those who do not golf are invited to lunch at 1 p.m.

Frick voting starts Wednesday on Facebook
Baseball fans can nominate broadcasters for the 2011 Ford C. Frick Award from Sept. 1-30 on the National Baseball Hall of Fame's Facebook page, www.facebook.com/baseballhall.
The Cooperstown shrine will hold online voting to determine three fan selections who will appear on the 2011 Frick ballot. A 20-member electorate will pick the Frick winner from the 10-person ballot. The winner will be announced during baseball's winter meetings in December in Orlando, Fla.
Presented annually since 1978 for excellence in baseball broadcasting, the Frick Award is given to an active or retired broadcaster with a minimum of 10 years of continuous major league broadcast service with a ballclub or network, or a combination of the two. Fans may select from more than 200 eligible broadcasters. Bios of each candidate will appear on the Hall's website, www.baseballhall.org.
A Hall research team will select the other seven broadcasters. ESPN and San Francisco Giants announcer Jon Miller won the award last year.
Hall to host Latin American tribute
The National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown will present a film-reel tribute to Latin American baseball Sept. 4.
The Hall will host a screening of "SPACEMAN: A Baseball Odyssey" as part of the presentation at 1 p.m. Sept. 4 in the Museum's Bullpen Theater. The 2006 Baseball Film Festival selection, on former big league pitcher Bill "Spaceman" Lee and his baseball journey to Cuba, will be part of a reel dedicated to Latin American baseball.

Area bowling leagues start soon
Several area bowling leagues have openings for their 2010 seasons, which are slated to begin in September.
 The Scho-Del Thursday Night Men's Bowling League at Vasta's Miracle Lanes in Stamford is looking for bowlers for the upcoming season.

The Oneonta Professional Firefighters Local 2408 will host its second annual golf tournament at 9 a.m. Sept. 11 at the Ouleout Creek Golf Course in North Franklin.
Cost is $60 per person for the captain-and-crew event, which includes 18 holes, lunch from Brooks', prizes and raffles. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to Oneonta Little League's Doc Knapp Field.

Lower Deck Dash set for Sept. 12
The annual Lower Deck Dash 5-kilometer Fun Run fundraiser will begin at noon Sept. 12 at the 6th Ward playground on Scramling Ave. in Oneonta.
Raceday registration runs from 9:30-11:30 a.m. T-shirt and pre-registration deadline is Aug. 27. Applications are available at the Oneonta Family YMCA and Sport Tech.
Proceeds from the event will benefit the 6th Ward playground.

Bowhunter class Sept. 19
The SUNY Delhi Turf Education Center will host a free Delaware County Bowhunter Education Class from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Sept. 19.
Students must pre-register and get a free copy of the "Today's Bowhunter" manual at Borow's Taxidermy on Route 28 in Delhi.
Students should read the manual and complete chapter review exercises before taking the course. Class size is limited to 40 students, who should bring their own lunches.
Students also may complete a free online course at www.bowhunter-ed.com/ny/index.htm. The online course is for preparation purposes only and does not replace the Sept. 19 class.
