Alomar tours Baseball Hall

Roberto Alomar visited Cooperstown for the first time Tuesday as the 2011 National Baseball Hall of Famer took his orientation tour.

Hall Director of Communications Craig Muder said via e-mail that Alomar chose to keep his tour "very private ... with no media availability." Muder's e-mail states that Alomar arrived in Cooperstown on Tuesday morning and that he left in the afternoon.

The baseball shrine traditionally gives newly elected Hall of Famers the freedom to select the level of privacy for their orientation tours, which usually take place in the spring. Expansion Era Committee selection Pat Gillick, for example, allowed The Associated Press and a few other media members to tour with him earlier this month. Gillick also held a brief post-tour conference that was open to more media members.

A Tuesday night Internet search produced one item on Alomar's visit to Cooperstown, a story by Muder that appeared on the Hall's website.

Alomar, 43, was a 12-time All-Star second baseman who amassed 2,724 hits and 10 Gold Gloves in 17 major league seasons. Alomar played for the San Diego Padres, the Toronto Blue Jays, the Baltimore Orioles, the Cleveland Indians, the New York Mets, the Chicago White Sox and the Arizona Diamondbacks. Alomar helped the Blue Jays to back-to-back World Series titles in 1992 and 1993.

Alomar will join fellow Baseball Writers' Association of America selection Bert Blyleven and Gillick at the 2011 Induction Ceremony, which is scheduled for July 24 at the Clark Sports Center in Cooperstown.

Blyleven has yet to take his orientation tour. The Hall does not disclose the dates of orientation tours to the public.
