Staff Report

The Sidney Central School Alumni Association will honor four during its 10th annual Alumni Sports Hall of Fame Induction Weekend, which is slated for Sept. 28-29.

All w

ill be recognized during the Induction Dinner and Ceremony at 5 p.m Sept. 29 at American Legion Post 183. Tickets cost $25 each and are available from any Sports Hall of Fame Committee member or through Glad Tidings and VEP in downtown Sidney. Committee members are chairman Greg Davie, Dennis Porter, Tony Zieno, Bonnie Curtis, Larry Halbert, Wayne King, Mike Mason, Doug Quinney and Wendy Weidman.

Induction Weekend begins with the annual Homecoming Football game at 7 p.m. Sept. 28, when  Sidney hosts Greene. Inductees and legacy members will be honored at halftime. A reception for the honorees and alumni will follow at the VFW on West Main Street.

Curtis was a four-year letterman in football who captained the undefeated 1956 Warriors and played in the 1958 Section Four East-West All-Star Game. He also wrestled and earned All-Star accolades in baseball.

Stanbro earned 14 letters in six sports and still holds one track record and shares another in sprints. As a junior, she declined to participate in cheerleading so she could be part of the first girls winter track team at Sidney.

Paranya has been a volunteer field events coach since 1986. He has coached six state champions in the high jump and numerous Section Four champions in the high jump, the long jump and the triple jump.

Drake won four state championships in track and field, including titles in the long and triple jump as a senior. She went on to compete at Lehigh University on a full track and field scholarship.

The 1991-92 field hockey team capped a 20-0-2 season with the Class A state championship, despite its status as a Class C school enrollment-wise. Sidney and Section Four Hall of Fame coach Mary Morrison led the squad, which included several players who competed at the college level. The team remains the only Sidney girls group to win a state title.
