{"HeadlineLight14"/}YMCA accepting league sign-ups

The Oneonta Family YMCA is accepting sign-ups for its racquetball, 30-and-over basketball and 50-and-over basketball leagues.

Racquetball runs Mondays starting Jan. 11, the 30-and-over basketball league runs Tuesdays beginning Jan. 12 and the 50-and-over basketball league runs Wednesdays starting Jan. 13.

Joining the racquetball league costs $50 for YMCA members and $100 for non-members. Each basketball league costs $65 for members and $110 for non-members to join. Sign-up sheets are available at the Oneonta Family YMCA on Ford Avenue. For more information, call 607-432-0010.

{"HeadlineLight14"/}SUNY Delhi to hold lifeguard class

SUNY Delhi will host a mandatory lifeguard training session for lifeguards and water safety instructors at 7 p.m. Jan. 27 at the college pool.

Participants must bring their lifeguard certifications, three forms of identification and their 2010 spring schedules. Participants also should be ready to swim Jan. 27.

SUNY Delhi also will host a waterfront lifeguard training class from March 15-May 3. Sign-ups are mandatory for the class, which includes AED, first aid and CPR-FPR training.

Class size is limited. Cost is $200, including a $45 non-refundable deposit at registration. The remainder of the fee is due the second day of class.

{"HeadlineLight14"/}State wrestling tickets on sale

Tickets for the 48th annual New York State Public High School Athletic Association Wrestling Championships are on sale at the Times Union Center Box Office in Albany, select Price Chopper outlets, by phone at 1-800-30-EVENT and via the Internet at www.timesunion.com.

The state championships, which enter their seventh year as a two-division format, are scheduled for Feb. 26-27 at the Times Union Center in Albany. More than 500 state qualifiers hailing from the 11 NYSPHSAA sections, the Public Schools Athletic League and the Catholic High School Athletic Association (CHSAA) will compete. The schedule of events is as follows:

Feb. 26: Session I _ 10 a.m. Parade of Champions; 10:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Preliminaries; 2:30-4:30 p.m. Quarterfinals; 4:30-6:30 p.m., Wrestlebacks; 6:30-8:30 p.m. Wrestlebacks.

Feb. 27: Session II _ 9:30 a.m. Special awards; 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Semifinals; 12:30-2 p.m. Wrestlebacks and consolation semifinals; 2-3:30 p.m. Consolation Finals.

Feb. 27: Session III _ 6 p.m. Championships.

One-session tickets cost $12 each. Three-ticket packages covering all sessions cost $38 (includes premium seating for finals) and $33. Premium seating for finals will not be sold separately during the championship rounds. The state championships will remain at the Times Union Center through 2012.

{"HeadlineLight14"/}Water exercise starts March 15

SUNY Delhi will host water exercise classes Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from March 15-April 30. Aerobic classes run from 5-6 p.m. each day during the six-week program, but no classes will be offered from April 12-15.

Cost is $6 per day for those who wish to participate one class at a time. Delhi also offers classes at the following rates: $30 for one day per week; $60 for two days per week; and $80 for three days per week.

Morris' Ray Clement boys basketball tournament will run Dec. 29-30.

The varsity tournament opens with Edmeston against Hamilton at 4 p.m. Dec. 29. Mohawk and Morris will follow at 5:30 p.m. The consolation is 3 p.m. Dec. 30, with the championship to follow at 4:30 p.m.

In the JV tournament, Edmeston and Hamilton play at 1 p.m., followed by Mohawk and Morris at 2:30 p.m. Dec. 29. The following day, the consolation game is at noon and the championship is at 1:30 p.m.

Admission is $3 for adults and $2 for students.

{"HeadlineLight14"/}Frost Bite 5K set for Dec. 31

The Oneonta Family YMCA is accepting registrations for its annual Frost Bite 5K Run, which will start at 1 p.m. Dec. 31 on Market Street in Oneonta.

The YMCA will hold race-day registration from 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Dec. 31. Pre-registration deadline is Dec. 18. Cost is $16 for pre-registered runners and $18 after Dec. 18. Registration for youths ages 10 and younger costs $8.

T-shirts are only guaranteed for pre-registered runners. T-shirts are available on race day on a first-come, first-served basis.

The Hoop Mountain NY Girls instructional clinic will run from 1:30-5 p.m. Jan. 3 at Davis College in Johnson City. The clinic will feature Phil Goings and will focus on shooting. Girls ages 8-18 are eligible to participate. Cost is $25.

The Oneonta Recreation Department is accepting registration for its 2010 men's and women's volleyball leagues.

Men will play Tuesday nights and women will compete Wednesday nights at the Asa C. Allison Memorial Building on Academy Street in Oneonta. The leagues run from Jan. 12 through early April.

Players must be age 18 or older to participate. Entry fee is $300 per team and must be paid by check or money order. Early registration is recommended as the number of teams is limited. No registrations will be accepted after each league's open play night.

The leagues also will hold preseason open play nights from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Jan. 5 (men) and Jan. 6 (women). Registration forms are available at the City Recreation Department in Neahwa Park. For more information, call 607-432-0680.

{"HeadlineLight14"/}Baseball Hall seeking interns

The National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown is accepting applications for the 2010 Frank and Peggy Steele Internship Program for Youth Leadership Development.

This summer-long internship offers hands-on training in numerous professional careers, as well as the chance to learn and work in the company of baseball's best-known personalities during the annual Hall of Fame Weekend and Induction Ceremony in Cooperstown.

To be considered for the program, students must have completed at least their sophomore year and be enrolled in a bachelor's or master's degree program at a college or university during the internship. Those who graduated this past May are also eligible.

Steele interns receive a bi-weekly stipend during the 10 weeks of the program and access to affordable student housing. If fulfilling an academic requirement, college credit may also be awarded. All applications must be completed online at www.baseballhall.org/intern. Application deadline is Jan. 31, 2010.

The Frank & Peggy Steele Internship Program also welcomes applicants for the Ozzie Smith Diversity Scholarship. Students of ethnically and culturally diverse backgrounds pursuing a four-year bachelor's or master's degree are eligible for a scholarship. SUNY Delhi has announced its swimming lessons schedule for the spring of 2010.

Option I is six lessons and runs from 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Saturdays from March 20-May 8. Cost is $35 for the entire session. Option II is 12 lessons and runs from 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Saturdays and 4-5 p.m. Wednesdays from March 17-May 8. Cost is $50.

Swimming lessons will not be held April 7, 10, 14 and 17.

The Blue Jays Baseball Club will hold its seventh annual exhibition series near Cooperstown for high school varsity teams in the spring of 2010.

The club also will host tournaments for summer teams ages 13, 14U, 15U, 16U and 18U. Night games are possible.

The winter session of Lacrosse Oneonta will run Mondays through Feb. 15 at the Oneonta Boys and Girls Club.

OBGC members in grades 3-7 will play from 5-7 p.m., followed by grades 8-12 from 7-9 p.m. There is no cost to play, but participants must be OBGC members. Equipment is limited.

Oneonta State is hosting a weekly television sports show called "Inside Red Dragon Sports" at 7:30 p.m. Mondays on Time Warner Cable channel 23. Replays of each show will be televised at 9:30 p.m. Thursdays and 6 p.m. Saturdays on TWC channel 23.

Archived episodes also will be available through the Internet on the campus' streaming site, which has a permanent link on O-State's athletics homepage at www.oneonta.edu/academics/athletics/.

Fifth-year coach Adam Hoover guided Oneonta High to its first Section Four Class B playoff appearance since 2002 last season and said the 2010 version of the Yellowjackets could be even better. "It's a matter of how quickly they come together," Hoover said. "If we play to our potential, we have the best overall team since I've been here. I don't think we'll have the one or two dominant guys like we've had, but we have a lot of athletes all over the field."

    HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL ... SIDNEY PREVIEW ... Success for Sidney's football program in 2010 will start with senior quarterback Dylan Umbra. "I don't know if you can put a value on him because it's so high," Sidney coach Jeff Matthews said of Umbra, heading into his fourth season as the Warriors' starter behind center. "He's been through it so many times. He's able to make decisions on the fly. ... Things are second nature. He knows what he has to do and now he can help out with some other players."

    HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL ... UNATEGO PREVIEW ... There's a new coach, a new quarterback and that same old demanding schedule. Unatego's football program, three years removed from a Section Four Class C title, will look to improve on its 2-7 record from a year ago. It may take some time, though. After all, first-year head coach Frank Microni wasn't announced as the successor to Art Rigas until the first day of practice for fall sports. Rigas left Unatego after three seasons to become an assistant coach at Hartwick College.

Pardon the other teams in Division VII of the Section Four Football Conference if don't throw a party in celebration of the Warriors dropping back down to Class D. Walton's return should make for an interesting division. This group of Walton, Delhi, Bainbridge-Guilford, Oxford, Harpursville and Seton Catholic Central sent three teams to the playoffs last season, including two sectional finalists.

    HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL ... UNADILLA VALLEY/EDMESTON PREVIEW ... When first-year head coach Stan Foulds checked Unadilla Valley/Edmeston's football equipment Aug. 15, he ran into a problem. He probably didn't mind that the Storm didn't have enough uniforms for the 2010 season, though. UV/E will have to use some junior varsity jerseys until another varsity shipment arrives as its roster has ballooned to 35 players _ up 15 from one season ago.
