Laing seeing double again for Cortland women's basketball team

Jessica Laing keeps doubling over women's basketball opponents this season.

Senior forward Laing, a South Kortright graduate, earned SUNY Athletic Conference Player of the Week honors on Nov. 24 following her third straight double-double to start the 2009-10 season.

The 2006 Daily Star Player of the Year in girls basketball, Laing started this season with 18 points and 12 rebounds in a 66-37 defeat of visiting Elmira on Nov. 17. She followed with 10 points and 17 rebounds in a 55-52 loss to Ithaca during the first round of the Kean Tip-Off Tournament on Nov. 21, then had 26 points, 12 rebounds and five steals the following day in a 72-58 victory over Husson University of Maine.

Laing, who led SK to the Class D state title in 2006, averaged 18.0 points and 13.7 rebounds the weekend before Thanksgiving and earned a spot on Kean's all-tournament team. She broke Cortland's all-time rebounding record against Ithaca, finishing that game with 973 in her fourth varsity season. Martha Gorton set the Red Dragons' rebounding record of 958 during the 1980s.

Laing and her Red Dragons visit Ithaca for a non-conference game at 6 p.m. today. She enters tonight's game with all-time program records of 1,629 points and 985 rebounds.

Cortland also picked Laing as its female athlete of the week Nov. 22.

The SUNYAC selected Laing as its Player of the Year last season, when she averaged 18.2 points and 11.3 rebounds in leading Cortland to a 24-5 record and an NCAA Division III Tournament appearance. Laing followed her third straight First Team All-SUNYAC award with Eastern College Athletic Conference Upstate New York Player of the Year honors and Third Team All-American accolades from D3hoops.com.

Laing had 19 double-doubles last season.

Young started in all 20 games for the Minutemen, whose season ended at 12-9 with a 2-1 loss to Richmond in the Atlantic-10 Tournament on Nov. 6. Young assisted Cher King on UMass' goal in the tournament game.

She also scored a season-high two goals in a 6-3 A-10 victory over visiting La Salle on Oct. 30 and led UMass to a 6-0 rout of West Chester on Nov. 1 by scoring 14 seconds into the match.

Senior running back Zurn (Sidney) amassed team-bests of 844 yards and 11 rushing touchdowns on 178 carries in 10 games for Brockport. He also had 275 receiving yards and three more touchdowns on 28 catches.

The 2005 Daily Star Player of the Year, Zurn has one year of college-football eligibility left as he missed his junior season with an injury. Brockport sports information director Kelly Vergin said Monday that Zurn, who played two games as a junior, has not decided if he will return next season.

The Golden Eagles' roster also included freshmen Brad Ashford (WR, Cooperstown), Jay Lloyd (LB, Unadilla Valley) and Tyler Mason (OL, Sidney).
