Jessica Laing keeps doubling over women's basketball opponents this season.
Senior forward Laing, a South Kortright graduate, earned SUNY Athletic Conference Player of the Week honors on Nov. 24 following her third straight double-double to start the 2009-10 season.
The 2006 Daily Star Player of the Year in girls basketball, Laing started this season with 18 points and 12 rebounds in a 66-37 defeat of visiting Elmira on Nov. 17. She followed with 10 points and 17 rebounds in a 55-52 loss to Ithaca during the first round of the Kean Tip-Off Tournament on Nov. 21, then had 26 points, 12 rebounds and five steals the following day in a 72-58 victory over Husson University of Maine.
Laing, who led SK to the Class D state title in 2006, averaged 18.0 points and 13.7 rebounds the weekend before Thanksgiving and earned a spot on Kean's all-tournament team. She broke Cortland's all-time rebounding record against Ithaca, finishing that game with 973 in her fourth varsity season. Martha Gorton set the Red Dragons' rebounding record of 958 during the 1980s.
Laing and her Red Dragons visit Ithaca for a non-conference game at 6 p.m. today. She enters tonight's game with all-time program records of 1,629 points and 985 rebounds.
Cortland also picked Laing as its female athlete of the week Nov. 22.
The SUNYAC selected Laing as its Player of the Year last season, when she averaged 18.2 points and 11.3 rebounds in leading Cortland to a 24-5 record and an NCAA Division III Tournament appearance. Laing followed her third straight First Team All-SUNYAC award with Eastern College Athletic Conference Upstate New York Player of the Year honors and Third Team All-American accolades from D3hoops.com.
Laing had 19 double-doubles last season.
Joe Bunzey
Afton graduate Bunzey played six games for the Morrisville State men's soccer team this past season.
Junior goalie Bunzey, who allowed six goals and made 12 saves, finished 0-4 for the Mustangs (3-14-1).
Silas Carey
Delhi Central graduate Carey ended his senior cross country season for Cortland State with a 55th-place finish in the SUNY Athletic Conference Championships on Oct. 31.
Carey completed the 8-kilometer course at Cortland in 28 minutes, 9.97 seconds
Jason Guernsey
Cherry Valley-Springfield graduate Guernsey finished his sophomore men's soccer season at Elmira College with four goals and two assists.
The 2007 Daily Star Player of the Year in boys soccer, midfielder Guernsey started seven games and appeared in 11 others for the Soaring Eagles (11-7-1).
On Sept. 29, he scored in a 1-0 defeat of Keuka en route to athlete of the week honors from Elmira.
Christina Houck
Sidney graduate Houck competed for the Morrisville women's volleyball team as a freshman setter this past season.
Houck had 87 digs in 95 games for the Mustangs, who finished 13-16 overall.
Matt Newman
Brockport senior wide receiver Newman (Unatego) will play in the Division III Football Senior Classic, which begins at 2 p.m. Saturday in Salem, Va.
Newman will join Hartwick WR Noah Koreman on the North team, which will play the South in a senior showcase that features 90 of the country's top D-III players. The game will be hosted by the Collegiate Development Football League.
Newman had a team-best 854 yards _ the second-best single-season mark in program history _ and eight touchdowns on 49 catches for the Golden Eagles (4-6). Newman led the New Jersey Athletic Conference in receiving yards (85.4 per game) en route to First Team all-conference honors.
Newman established a Brockport single-game record with 188 yards in a 48-30 victory over Buffalo State on Nov. 14. He ranks fifth in all-time receiving yards at Brockport with 1,501 on 102 catches.
Dan O'Brien
The Daily Star's 2008 Player of the Year for boys basketball, Oneonta High graduate O'Brien has left the men's varsity program at Rochester Institute of Technology.
"He's not at RIT anymore," Tigers sports information director Stephen Jaynes said Monday of O'Brien, who averaged 2.0 points and 1.4 rebounds in 21 games as a freshman guard last season. "He just didn't come back."
OHS boys coach Jerry Mackey said Monday that O'Brien is enrolled at Monroe Community College but is not playing basketball to keep his three remaining years of college eligibility. Mackey added that O'Brien is looking to return to college basketball at the Division-II or D-III level in the future.
Jennifer Patten
Bainbridge-Guilford graduate Patten is averaging 9.0 points and 7.7 rebounds as a junior guard for the Cortland women's basketball team.
Patten had season highs of 12 points and 15 rebounds in Cortland's 55-52 loss to Ithaca on Nov. 21 during the Kean Tip-Off Tournament.
Teammate Hannah Johnson (Unadilla Valley), a freshman swing player, has played three scoreless minutes for the Red Dragons, who have received one point and six rebounds from junior guard/forward Marie O'Malley (Oneonta High) in 12 minutes.
Raffi Perry
Unadilla Valley graduate Perry is averaging 6.3 points for the Onondaga Community College men's basketball team.
Perry is playing his first year of college basketball after redshirting last season.
Brittany Westcott
Junior goalie Westcott (Davenport) won the Cazenovia women's soccer team MVP award during the Wildcats' annual fall sports banquet Nov. 16.
Westcott made 18 saves in a 1-0 North Eastern Athletic Conference loss to Keuka College on Oct. 29, which ended Cazenovia's season at 3-13-1. She finished the season with 193 saves, giving her an all-time program record of 315 to surpass Kaila Buffis' previous mark of 298.
Kim Young
Sidney graduate Young finished her freshman season as a midfielder for the Division I University of Massachusetts field hockey team with four goals and five assists.
Young started in all 20 games for the Minutemen, whose season ended at 12-9 with a 2-1 loss to Richmond in the Atlantic-10 Tournament on Nov. 6. Young assisted Cher King on UMass' goal in the tournament game.
She also scored a season-high two goals in a 6-3 A-10 victory over visiting La Salle on Oct. 30 and led UMass to a 6-0 rout of West Chester on Nov. 1 by scoring 14 seconds into the match.
Aaron Zurn
Senior running back Zurn (Sidney) amassed team-bests of 844 yards and 11 rushing touchdowns on 178 carries in 10 games for Brockport. He also had 275 receiving yards and three more touchdowns on 28 catches.
The 2005 Daily Star Player of the Year, Zurn has one year of college-football eligibility left as he missed his junior season with an injury. Brockport sports information director Kelly Vergin said Monday that Zurn, who played two games as a junior, has not decided if he will return next season.
The Golden Eagles' roster also included freshmen Brad Ashford (WR, Cooperstown), Jay Lloyd (LB, Unadilla Valley) and Tyler Mason (OL, Sidney).
