Balanced Hawks rout Vassar, 72-53

Mark Blazek's 15 points paced five Hartwick College scorers in double figures as the Hawks defeated visiting Vassar, 72-53, in a non-conference men's basketball game Tuesday.

Kyle Phillips contributed 13 points and 11 rebounds, and Chris Ryder had his college-high of 14 points and eight rebounds for Hartwick, which outscored Vassar, 40-8, in the paint.

James Mantas and Martin McCann had 11 points apiece for the Hawks (3-1), who led, 39-25, at halftime.

Vassar cut Hartwick's lead to four points with about 4 1/2 minutes left in the first half, but the Hawks responded with a 16-2 run. Ryder had four points during the spurt and McCann and Mantas each hit three-pointers.

A dunk by Phillips in the second half gave Hartwick a 72-42 lead.

John Donnelly had a team-high 17 points for Vassar (2-2).

The Hawks play host to Skidmore at 8 p.m. Dec. 1.

Cobleskill 54, Union 52

Damon Franklin hit a 12-foot turnaround jumper with 14 seconds left to snap a 52-all tie as host SUNY Cobleskill earned its first victory of the season.

Franklin then made a steal with five seconds left to seal it.

Cobleskill (1-4) plays host to Rochester Institute of Technology at 2 p.m. Sunday. Oneonta High graduate Brendan Harder plays for RIT.

Hartwick 70, Union 62

Fritzi Flores hit a three-pointer with 11 minutes left to give Hartwick the lead the keeps and another with 32 seconds to play to give the Hawks a six-point lead in their 70-62 victory against visiting Union.

The Hawks (2-2) erased a 12-point halftime deficit by outscoring Union, 45-25, in the second half.

Hartwick made 16 of 30 shots from the field in the second half, including 5-for-10 from three-point range. It also went 8-for-9 from the free throw line after halftime.

Flores' three-pointer with 11:03 left gave Hartwick a 53-50 lead.

Jalicia Connell then hit a three with 9:46 left to make it 56-60.

Union (0-1) closed to 65-62 on a layup by Lauren McCormick with 57 seconds to play, but Flores answered with a three 25 seconds latger to give Hartwick a 68-62 cushion.

Cassie Dresser finished with 14 points to lead the Hawks. Connell contributed 12 points and eight rebounds. Lauren Ploof and Flores had 10 points apiece.

The Hawks play host to Skidmore at 6 p.m. Dec. 1.

Ithaca 66, O-State 50

The visiting Red Dragons were within a point at halftime before Ithaca College closed on a 34-19 run to win the non-conference game.

O-State falls to 0-3.

Unatego graduate Erika Puffer had nine points and 10 rebounds for O-State. Teammates Samantha Szkotak had 14 points and Rebecca Bucci contributed 11.

Jordan Confessore had 17 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Bombers (3-2).

O-State plays host to Potsdam at 6 p.m. Dec. 4.

W. Conn. 80, Cobleskill 45

Chelcey Moore and Kaitlin Myers scored 10 points apiece for Cobleskill in its non-league loss at Western Connecticut State University.

Heidi Anderson contributed nine points for the Fighting Tigers (2-2), who made 16 of 57 shots from the field.

Katie Moffo had 20 points and nine rebounds to lead the Colonials (3-1).

Cobleskill plays at 7 p.m. Dec. 2 at Geneseo State

O-State swimmer recognized

Oneonta State freshman swimmer Kristen Magliola earned SUNY Athletic Conference women's swimmer of the week honors Monday.

Magliola won three events in leading the Red Dragons to the team championship in the North Country Invitational this past weekend at Potsdam State.

Through the first three weeks of the season, Magliola has set school records in the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke events, and came within a second of the 200 individual medley record.

At Potsdam, she won the 200 breaststroke in a school-record time of 2:33.58. Her 100 breaststroke split in the 400 medley relay of 1:09.90 also bettered her school record he set earlier in the season. She also won the 200 IM and the 100 breaststroke.

    HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS BASKETBALL ... ONEONTA _ Kelsey Baker hears voices in her head, but only when she's at the foul line. "I hear everyone in the background and stuff," Oneonta High junior forward Baker said Monday night, "but mainly, it's just me, the ball and the basket. You've just got to make them." Junior forward Baker made five clutch free throws in a row in the fourth quarter, when she scored seven of her team-high 11 points to lead host Oneonta High to a 35-27 girls basketball victory over Norwich.

    HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP ... Brandon Fallon capped his 14-point night on a layup with about 40 seconds left that provided the winning points in Edmeston's 54-52 Tri-Valley League boys basketball victory at Richfield Springs on Monday.

  • O-State coach, Unatego AD takes job in Fla.

    The recent departure of Bill May left vacancies at Oneonta State and the Unatego School District. May, 47, was announced as Southeastern University's women's tennis coach Friday. He'll also be the school's men's tennis coach the following season when that program begins its first season. May spent seven seasons as the men's and women's tennis coach at Oneonta State. He served as athletic director at Unatego the last two seasons.

The Hawks opened their season with a 20-5 loss to seventh-ranked UC-Irvine but bounced back with a 14-11 overtime win against No. 20 CSU-Northridge in games played at Riverside, Calif. They capped the day with a 14-9 triumph at the University of Redlands, marking their 300th win.
