OHS grad Harlem off to quick start

If Madie Harlem continues to produce as she has during Hamilton College's first two women's basketball games, it probably won't take long for her to crack the team's starting lineup.

Oneonta High graduate Harlem, The Daily Star's Player of the Year in 2009, is averaging 10 points, six rebounds, four steals and three assists for the Continentals (1-1). Perhaps more impressive is that Harlem has produced those numbers despite averaging 22.5 minutes of playing time.

She scored 11 points on 5-for-8 shooting from the floor in Hamilton's 79-59 victory over Suffolk on Saturday. Harlem also had three rebounds, four steals, two assists and three turnovers.

In a 71-69 loss to Emerson College on Friday, Harlem had nine points, eight rebounds, four assists, four steals and five turnovers.

For the season, Harlem has hit 9 of 16 shots, including 2-for-4 from three-point range.

Harlem led the Yellowjackets to a 25-1 record last season, averaging 18.2 points to go along with 113 assists and 98 steals. She was a first-team all-state performer in Class B last season, when the Yellowjackets advanced to the state final.

Kalynn Birdsall

Unatego graduate Birdsall earned all-Mountain Valley Conference honors for the second straight year as a defender for the Mohawk Valley Community College women's soccer team.

Mohawk Valley went 18-4 and won the NJCAA Region III championship.

Brendan Harder

Sophomore center Harder (Oneonta High) is averaging 12.5 points and 7.0 rebounds for the Rochester Institute of Technology men's basketball team.

Harder is 10-for-21 from the field and 5-for-9 from the free throw line. He also has six blocks and three steals. The Tigers are 0-2.

Lauren Harder

Oneonta High graduate Harder earned second-team all-North Eastern Athletic Conference honors in volleyball for Cazenovia College.

Harder, a sophomore, was also a second-team selection last season.

For the second straight year, Harder led the Wildcats in kills. Her 199 kills this past season were the third most in a single season in Cazenovia history. Over two seasons, she has 365 kills, which is third all-time at Cazenovia.

Harder also led the team in blocks (38) and her 34 aces were second on the team. She also contributed 90 digs.

The Wildcats went 7-18.

Jodi Kenyon

Worcester graduate Kenyon was named The Commonwealth Coast Conference Coach of the Year for women's soccer after leading Endicott (Mass.) College to a conference title and a 17-5-1 record.

The Gulls advanced to the NCAA Division III tournament, eliminating a Geneseo squad led by Oneonta High graduate Eileen Coyle in the opening round in a penalty-kick shootout.

In the second round, Endicott lost, 1-0, to Messiah College (23-0-1), which has advanced to the final four.

Kenyon scored 108 goals for Worcester in the mid-1980s.

She completed her fifth season at Endicott.

Alex Mirabito

Freshman guard Mirabito (Oneonta High) has appeared in two of Oswego State's three men's basketball games this season.

Mirabito, The Daily Star's Player of the Year in 2009, is 0-for-2 from the floor and has one steal for the Lakers (2-1).

Colleen O'Hara

Plymouth State freshman O'Hara (Unatego) is averaging 3.7 points and 2.7 rebounds through her team's first three basketball games.

O'Hara is 3-for-15 from the field and 5-for-8 from the free throw line. She has three assists, three steals, one block and 11 turnovers.

Plymouth is 3-0.

Tyler Mumbulo

Bainbridge-Guilford graduate Mumbulo placed third Saturday in the 125-pound gold division in the Auggie-Brute-Adidas Open wrestling tournament at Augsburg College in Minnesota.

Mumbulo wrested unattached but is listed as a red-shirt senior on Upper Iowa University's Division II team.

Victor Coronado, a freshman from Afton, and Trevor Franklin, a red-shirt sophomore who wrestled for Unadilla Valley, are also on UIU's roster. Coronado wrestles at 141 pounds and Franklin is at 133.

Lauren Payne

College of Misericordia sophomore Payne (Oneonta High) made 14 starts for the women's soccer team and finished with two assists.

Payne played in 19 games for the Cougars, who went 8-12.

Matt Potter

Junior forward Potter (Unadilla Valley) has appeared in one game for the Wentworth (Mass.) Institute of Technology's men's basketball team.

Potter, who played for Onondaga Community College the past two seasons, went 2-for-2 from the free throw line and had one block in WIT's 79-63 loss to Wheelock on Wednesday.

WIT is 1-3.
