Staff Report
A second quarter full of Oneonta High turnovers helped Johnson City to a 63-51 boys basketball victory in the opening round of the Anthony C. Drago Tournament at OHS on Tuesday.
"They turned the pressure up and we didn't respond," Yellowjackets coach Jerry Mackey said of a 22-9 run that helped the Wildcats to a 32-20 halftime lead. "We would have been better off throwing it into the bleachers, because they turned (our turnovers) into layups."
The season-opener for both teams also counted in the Southern Tier Athletic Conference standings.
Sophomore forward Bryce Wooden scored a team-high 16 points and classmate Mike Calkins had 13 for the Yellowjackets, who never got their deficit below 10 points in the second half.
"Calkins and Wooden played well inside," said Mackey, whose team will play Holland Patent in the consolation game at 6:15 p.m. Friday. "We had (Nate) Eastman open deep in the paint a few times but couldn't get him the ball.
"We'll improve with time," he continued. "JC is one of the better pressing teams we'll face."
Eastman, a senior forward, finished with eight points.
The Wildcats, who'll play Seton Catholic Central in the final at 8:15 p.m. Friday, were led by Rashawn Powell's 17 points. Troy Robinson contributed 13 for JC.
