{"HeadlineLight14"/}Area seniors to run in Federations

Local high school seniors Caleb Edmonds and Chris Burnett will compete in the boys Federation Cross Country Championships at 1 p.m. Saturday at Bowdoin Park in Wappinger Falls.

Cooperstown's Edmonds finished sixth in the Class D state championships last Saturday at SUNY Plattsburgh, completing a 5-kilometer course in 16 minutes, 10.9 seconds. The website tullyrunners.com ranks Edmonds 29th overall for the Federation meet, which features a field of 258 runners covering all classes (AA-D).

Edmonds is ranked second among Class D runners, trailing state champion Mike Champagne of Section Seven's Seton Catholic.

Bainbridge-Guilford/Afton runner Burnett is ranked fifth in Class D. He placed seventh in last Saturday's Class D state finals, crossing in 16:15.19.

Opening ceremonies start at 11:45 a.m. Saturday, followed by the girls race at 12:15 p.m.

Cooperstown freshman Alannah Haggerty has advanced to the finals of the New York state Punt, Pass & Kick competition, which will run during halftime of the New York Jets' Nov. 29 home game against the Carolina Panthers.

Haggerty, 14, will compete in the girls 14-15 age group. She finished first in her age-group during a local competition at Neahwa Park in October and won a sectional event in Middletown earlier this month with a combined distance of 281 feet. Haggerty plays soccer, basketball and softball for the Redskins.

The Gilbertsville Rod and Gun Club will close its rifle range and trap-shoot area during big-game hunting season from this Saturday through Dec. 22. There will be no drives during the first week of the season.

The Oneonta Elks Baketball Hoop Shoot free throw competition starts at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Oneonta Boys and Girls Club. The competition is open to players ages 7-13. {"HeadlineLight14"/}Soccer Hall to host boys final four

The National Soccer Hall of Fame fields will host the state semifinals and championship games in classes AA-D on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.

Saturday's semifinal schedule begins at 9 a.m. with two Class A games _ Pittsford-Mendon vs. Comsewogue and New Hartford vs. Byram Hills. The Class B semifinals _ Grover Cleveland vs. Center Moriches and Marcellus vs. Broadalbin-Perth _ follow at 10:30 a.m. Marcellus beat Oneonta High, 2-1, in a Class B state quarterfinal Nov. 13.

At 11:15 a.m., Holland will meet Friends Academy and Marathon plays Waterford-Halfmoon in the Class C semifinals. Section Four champion Marathon downed Section Three winner Cooperstown, 1-0, in a state quarterfinal last weekend.

The 1 p.m. semifinals feature Belfast against Northville and Hamilton against Chazy in Class D. Section Three's Hamilton ended the season of Section Four's Margaretville last weekend with a 2-0 state-quarterfinal win. Class AA semifinals start at 1:30 p.m., with Clarence against Brentwood and Shenendehowa meeting Newburgh.

Semifinal winners advance to their respective championship games at the following times: 11 a.m. Class A; 11:40 a.m. Class B; 12:30 p.m. Class C; 1 p.m. Class D; and 1:30 p.m. Class AA.

The Soccer Hall will be open to the public from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. each day. Awards ceremonies will follow each game in the Hall's atrium area.

{"HeadlineLight14"/}OBGC to continue softball camp

The Oneonta Boys and Girls Club will hold its last session of the 2009 Oneonta Pitching Camp for softball players this Sunday.

Times for the camp, which is designed for girls ages 8-18, are as follows: Intermediate/Advanced Session I, 1-2 p.m.; Intermediate/Advanced Session II, 2-3 p.m.; Beginning Session III, 3-4 p.m.

Cost is $75 per session. Cost for those who participate in both intermediate/advanced sessions is $125.

{"HeadlineLight14"/}Drago tournaments start next week

Oneonta High's boys and girls basketball teams will open their seasons next week as hosts of the Anthony C. Drago tip-off tournaments. Each tournament features four junior varsity teams and four varsity squads.

The boys start Tuesday with JV games between Oneonta and Johnson City (3 p.m.) and Seton Catholic Central and Holland Patent (4:45 p.m.). Seton and HP open the varsity tournament at 6:30 p.m., followed by OHS and JC at 8:15 p.m.

The JV consolation and championship games run at 3 and 4:45 p.m., respectively, on Nov. 27, followed by the varsity consolation and title games at 6:30 and 8:15 p.m., respectively.

The Drago girls tournaments start Wednesday with JV games between Oneonta and Susquehanna Valley (3 p.m.) followed by Gloversville and Vestal (4:45 p.m.). Varsity games between Gloversville and Vestal (6:30 p.m.) and OHS and SV (8:15 p.m.) follow.

The JV consolation and championship games run at 3 and 4:45 p.m., respectively, on Nov. 28, followed by the varsity consolation and title games at 6:30 and 8:15 p.m., respectively.

Tickets cost $2 for adults and $1 for students.

{"HeadlineLight14"/}Morris to host girls basketball tourney

Morris plays host to the annual Joan Martin Thanksgiving Classic girls basketball tournament Nov. 27-28.

DeRuyter will play Hamilton at 4 p.m. Nov. 27 and Morris will meet Deposit at 5:30 p.m. The consolation game is at 3 p.m. Nov. 28 with the championship to follow at 4:30.

The junior varsity portion of the tournament pits DeRuyter against Hamilton at 1 p.m. and Deposit against Morris at 2:30 p.m. Nov. 27. The consolation is at noon Nov. 28, followed by the title game at 2:30 p.m.

Tickets cost $3 for adults and $2 for students.

{"HeadlineLight14"/}Unatego to host Alumni Weekend

Unatego's sixth annual Alumni Weekend will run from Nov. 27-29. There will be a women's alumni volleyball game at 7 p.m. Nov. 27; a men's basketball game at 7 p.m. Nov. 28; and an indoor soccer game at 1 p.m. Nov. 29.

The National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown will host its Holiday Celebration from 3-5 p.m. Dec. 5. A holiday concert featuring Pathfinder Village Hand Bell Choir and the Oneonta State Tonics A Cappella group will be held in the Hall's Plaque Gallery.

The Hall's Autumn Glory exhibit, recently updated with several artifacts from the 2009 postseason, also will be open.

Visitors will receive free admission with the donation of at least two non-perishable food items Dec. 5. Donations will support the Cooperstown Food Bank and Opportunities for Otsego.

Morris' Ray Clement boys basketball tournament will run Dec. 29-30.

The varsity tournament opens with Edmeston against Hamilton at 4 p.m. Dec. 29. Mohawk and Morris will follow at 5:30 p.m. The consolation is 3 p.m. Dec. 30, with the championship to follow at 4:30 p.m.

In the JV tournament, Edmeston and Hamilton play at 1 p.m., followed by Mohawk and Morris at 2:30 p.m. Dec. 29. The following day, the consolation game is at noon and the championship is at 1:30 p.m.

Admission is $3 for adults and $2 for students.

The Blue Jays Baseball Club will hold its seventh annual exhibition series near Cooperstown for high school varsity teams in the spring of 2010.

The winter session of Lacrosse Oneonta will run Mondays through Feb. 15 at the Oneonta Boys and Girls Club.

OBGC members in grades 3-7 will play from 5-7 p.m., followed by grades 8-12 from 7-9 p.m. There is no cost to play, but participants must be OBGC members. Equipment is limited. For more information, call Bob Leary at 607-433-0998.

{"HeadlineLight14"/}Perch Derby scheduled for Feb. 6

The Oxford Lions Club will host the 11th Chenango Lake Perch Derby Feb. 6 on Chenango Lake in New Berlin.

Should the event need to be postponed, it will run Feb. 20.

The derby offers numerous prizes, including ones for catching the largest perch and the largest pickerel of the day. Prizes also will be awarded for the largest perch every 15 minutes.

A specially-tagged perch is worth $1,000 in cash. If it is not caught, the prize will be raffled off to registered participants. Should insufficient ice result in the cancellation of the derby, the prize will be raffled off to those who pre-registered.

The Oxford Lions Club also will hold a raffle that will be drawn on the day of the derby. All raffle prizes will be worth at least $100.

Proceeds from the Chenango Lake Perch Derby are used to maintain many community and area projects supported by the Oxford Lions Club, such as eye examinations and eyeglasses for those in need.

Last year's derby attracted more than 800 participants and spectators.

Oneonta State is hosting a weekly television sports show called "Inside Red Dragon Sports" at 7:30 p.m. Mondays on Time Warner Cable channel 23. Replays of each show will be televised at 6 p.m. the following Saturday on TWC channel 23.

The show also will be available through the Internet on the campus' streaming site, which has a permanent link on O-State's athletics homepage at www.oneonta.edu/academics/athletics/.

"I hear everyone in the background and stuff," Oneonta High junior forward Baker said Monday night, "but mainly, it's just me, the ball and the basket. You've just got to make them." Junior forward Baker made five clutch free throws in a row in the fourth quarter, when she scored seven of her team-high 11 points to lead host Oneonta High to a 35-27 girls basketball victory over Norwich.

    HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP ... Brandon Fallon capped his 14-point night on a layup with about 40 seconds left that provided the winning points in Edmeston's 54-52 Tri-Valley League boys basketball victory at Richfield Springs on Monday.

  • O-State coach, Unatego AD takes job in Fla.

    The recent departure of Bill May left vacancies at Oneonta State and the Unatego School District. May, 47, was announced as Southeastern University's women's tennis coach Friday. He'll also be the school's men's tennis coach the following season when that program begins its first season. May spent seven seasons as the men's and women's tennis coach at Oneonta State. He served as athletic director at Unatego the last two seasons.

The Hawks opened their season with a 20-5 loss to seventh-ranked UC-Irvine but bounced back with a 14-11 overtime win against No. 20 CSU-Northridge in games played at Riverside, Calif. They capped the day with a 14-9 triumph at the University of Redlands, marking their 300th win.
