Former O-Tiger suspended for drug use

Staff and Wire Reports

Former Oneonta Tigers third baseman Ronnie Bourquin has been suspended 50 games after testing positive for an amphetamine under baseball's minor league drug policy.

Bourquin, who played part of last season with Double-A Erie, was penalized Thursday. The suspension will take place at the beginning of next season.

Bourquin played for the O-Tigers during the 2006 and 2007 seasons.

A second-round selection (50th overall) out of Ohio State in 2006, Bourquin hit .266 (67-for-252) in his rookie season with the O-Tigers. He played in 67 games that season, hitting 13 doubles, two home runs and a triple. Bourquin also had 24 RBIs.

In 2007, he hit .325 (63-for-194) in 57 games. Bourquin had 13 doubles, three triples, two homers and 28 RBIs.

He also played 26 games with Single-A Lakeland in 2007.

After playing for Single-A West Michigan in 2008, Bourquin split time between West Michigan and Erie this past season.

In 37 games with Erie, he hit .228 (29-for-127) with five homers and 19 RBIs in 37 games.

There have been 76 suspensions this year under the minor league program and four under the major league plan.
